Vladimir Vujasinovic is the new head coach of the Serbian national team; the WPF of Serbia confirmed this morning.
Vujasinovic had an outstanding career as a player, and since 2012 he has been a successful head coach.
Vujasinović served as captain of the national team and was one of the leaders of a generation that won numerous medals at the highest-level competitions in the 1900s and until 2008, when he retired from the national team.
He played for Primorje, Crvena zvezda, Barcelona, Partizan, Roma, and Pro Recco, winning 37 club trophies, including four EuroLeague titles. With the national team, he won four gold medals at major international competitions (the 2005 World Championship and the 2001, 2003, and 2006 European Championships), as well as four silver and four bronze medals. In 2001, he was named the World Water Polo Player of the Year.
Many consider Vujasinovic one of the best players ever.
He started his coaching career at Partizan in 2012. Since then, he has coached Partizan, Pro Recco, Novi Beograd, and Greece’s Vouliagmeni. It hasn’t been confirmed yet if Vujasinovic will remain at Vouliagmeni. However, the WPF of Serbia allows its coach to lead the national team and the foreign club at the same time.
Vujasinovic returns to the Serbia coaching staff, as he was an assistant to Dejan Savic during the team’s very successful era, when Serbia won gold medals at the 2016 Olympic Games, the 2015 World Championship, the 2014 and 2016 European Championships, and the 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 World League competitions.
He also coached the junior national team of Serbia, winning medals at the European and World age group championships.
As clubs’ head coach, Vujasinovic won the silver medal in the Champions League with Pro Recco in 2018 and reached the semifinals of the same competition on four occasions (with Partizan in 2013 and 2014, with Pro Recco in 2017, and with Vouliagmeni in 2023).
“We are confident that Vujasinovic, through his authority, expertise, and commitment to the national team, will contribute to its further development and the achievement of the highest goals in the years ahead., the WPF of Serbia announced, welcoming Vujasinovic, and added: His appointment marks an important moment for both the national team and Serbian water polo as a whole”.
In addition to Vujasinovic, the Serbian national team’s coaching and support staff will currently consist of: Milos Korolija and Sergej Sveljo (assistant coaches), Djordje Ivancevic, Goran Loncar (doctors), Dragan Parandilovic (physiotherapeutist).
This year, Serbia will compete in the Mediterranean Games in August, so the new head coach will have enought time to prepare the team.
But Vujasinovic takes over the team at a very difficult moment, following turbulent events that include an announced boycott of the national team by 11 players.
Vujasinovic’s leadership and the stature he enjoys within Serbian water polo could help put things back on track
