VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to create awareness among citizens on the use of organic fertilisers and make compost available at affordable prices to NGOs and residents involved in plantation drives. The civic body is also planning special branding for vermi-compost so that it can be easily identified as an organic product produced by the VMC.
Stressing that municipal waste should be viewed as a valuable resource rather than garbage, VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyana Chandra directed officials to intensify efforts to convert waste into wealth through scientific waste management practices.
The commissioner visited Bandar Road, Patamata, Electricity Colony and Yanamalakuduru Road areas to review sanitation management, wet waste collection and vermi-compost production.
Dhyana Chandra said segregation of waste into wet and dry categories at the source was crucial for effective scientific management. He instructed officials to fully implement the process of converting wet waste into vermi-compost and organic manure.
The commissioner inspected vermi-compost units at Patamata and Electricity Colony and suggested that the organic fertiliser produced from wet waste be used in parks, roadside plantations and other green spaces maintained by the civic body.
He said such initiatives would help protect plants, provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and contribute to a greener Vijayawada.
Later, the commissioner inspected the Anna Canteen at Patamata and instructed officials to ensure proper sanitation, safe drinking water supply and uninterrupted utility services through regular monitoring.
Zonal Commissioner K. Shammi, Executive Engineer Samrajyam, Assistant City Planner Mohan Babu and other officials accompanied him during the inspection.
