Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed in by Sarasota and Manatee County coaches during the week to htincoming@gmail.com. Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine the Boys Athlete of the Week.
Cardinal Mooney football player Seneca Hawthorne was voted the Herald-Tribune Boys Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, Inc., for the week of Sept. 7-12, 2026.
The Herald-Tribune Boys Athlete of the Week sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network for Sept. 7-12, 2026, was Cardinal Mooney football player Seneca Hawthorne, who won the poll with 72 percent of the vote. Hawthorne returned a kickoff for 99 yards. He also caught a 22-yard pass for a touchdown in Mooney’s 67-10 win over Wellen Park on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Cross Country
Jack Greenwell, Sarasota: Greenwell, a senior, finished 17th, running an 18:21.7 at the North Port Invitational, which featured 21 teams.
Isaiah Leake, Cardinal Mooney: Leake, a freshman, placed 10th with a 17:59.3 in the 2026 North Port Invitational, featuring 21 teams.
Gabe Milliken, Sarasota Christian: Milliken finished third with a 17:23.1 at the SSAA Championships at Holloway Park. He helped Sarasota Christian to a seventh-place finish out of 16 teams.

Football
Justin Flores, Riverview: Flores had three touchdowns in Riverview’s 49-47 win over Manatee. He combined with running back Michael Peterson for at least 27 carries and over 250 yards.
Ashton Kelly, Palmetto: Kelly had two touchdowns in Palmetto’s 38-28 win over Naples. He had a 2-yard touchdown, helping the Tigers to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter. Then, he had a 70-yard score.
David Louis, Braden River: Louis had 137 yards on 10 carries in Braden River’s 37-6 win over North Port. He had a 58-yard and a 2-yard touchdown run, recording 100 yards before the first quarter was over.

Michael Peterson, Riverview: Peterson had three touchdowns in Riverview’s 49-47 win over Manatee. He combined with Flores for at least 37 carries and over 250 yards.
Golf
Owen Gellatly, Lakewood Ranch: Gellatly finished 10 under par in a shortened 27-hole South Florida PGA East Coast Championship. He helped the Mustangs to a second-place finish.
Jude Menard, Sarasota: Menard shot a 70 at the Jenkins Invitational in Lakeland, tying for seventh. He had Sarasota’s highest score of the day, helping the Sailors to a third-place finish.
Declan Young, Lakewood Ranch: Young finished 3 under par at the Jenkins Invitational in Lakeland, tying for the Mustangs’ lowest score with Donovan Plakyda. He helped Lakewood Ranch to a first-place finish.
