Parts of Perth CBD closed as Land Forces expo gets underway

Parts of the Perth CBD have been closed this morning in preparation for the Land Forces Exhibition, which begins today at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The international weapons expo is expected to attract thousands of visitors, with nearly 1000 organisations from 60 different countries hosting exhibits.

There is already a heavy police presence outside the venue this morning, with commuters warned to expect delays on Mounts Bay Road and parking closures from today through to Thursday.

Police officers have been given special powers to keep the peace at the event after violent protests against the event in Melbourne two years ago.

Around 12 people have been excluded from coming near the event. A peaceful anti-war protest is planned for this afternoon, with people to march from Yagan Square to Elizabeth Quay.

Welcome to our live news blog

Good morning and welcome to our live news blog for this Tuesday, the 6th of October.

Making headlines today,“unusual” sample results have forced several popular Perth beaches to remain closed after a whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach last week.

The whale was finally taken to Red Hill tip on Thursday, having washed ashore days earlier, drawing hungry sharks and curious onlookers to the busy metropolitan beach.

Yesterday, the Town of Cambridge revealed all beaches in the local government’s boundaries would remain closed for another 24 hours after water samples taken at the end of last week revealed high levels of the bacteria E. coli at City Beach, City Beach North and Floreat Beach.

Water testing results, taken yesterday, are expected to be released today.
