Police lash drink, drug-drivers after horror weekend on WA roads
WA Police are lamenting the continued flouting of road safety laws after dozens of drivers were caught with drugs or alcohol in their system in a synchronised operation targeting Perth’s entertainment precincts at the weekend.
The operation on Saturday night came as the state reeled from six road deaths in the space of 24 hours.
Commander Mike Peters, from the Road Policing Command, said on Sunday it was “disturbing” to see so many people caught driving while drunk or under the influence of alcohol in a targeted “lockdown” in Joondalup and in a motorbike team operation in Northbridge.
“There seems to be a small proportion of West Australians that still don’t think they’re going to get caught, and they still don’t think it happens to them,” he said.

Making headlines today is the revelation that Perth will host two of the next three AFL State of Origin games, with WA Premier Roger Cook to join the league’s chief executive Andrew Dillon for the announcement at Optus Stadium this morning.
The next clash – between WA and South Australia – will be held in late February 2027, before WA and Victoria meet again in February 2029.
AFL chief executive Dillon has made the re-introduction of state of origin one of his fixturing priorities, the league having abandoned the State of Origin concept (last played in 2008 for the 150th anniversary of Australian football) that the league created in 1977.
