Warangal Readies for Summer, Raises Drinking Water Storage Capacity

Warangal: The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) has launched a summer preparedness plan to prevent drinking water shortages amid forecasts of intense heat and declining water levels due to the El Nino effect.

Officials are focusing on storing water in available reservoirs and reviving water bodies that have remained unused for years. Ensuring adequate drinking water supply ahead of the upcoming corporation elections is also a priority for the administration.

Bhadra Kali lake, one of Warangal’s major drinking water sources, has recently been desilted to improve its storage capacity. Officials have been pumping water from the Devadula project into the lake for the past 15 days in view of the anticipated El Nino conditions.

Civic body’s engineer Ravi Kumar said the storage capacity of the lake, which was 15 feet, has reached 10.30 feet. The lake would store sufficient water before the approaching summer. Plans are also to revive the Vaddepalli reservoir in the Kazipet area for drinking water purposes.

Water supply from the reservoir had been discontinued 15 years ago.

Officials plan to first test the water quality and then pump Devadula water into the reservoir for storage. If successful, the initiative could provide another drinking water source for Kazipet.

The city currently receives drinking water from the Dharmasagar reservoir. However, alternative sources to prevent shortages, irrespective of the severity of the El Nino effect, are being explored.

The corporation is examining the possibility of using water from Bondi vagu, the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) and the Kakatiya canal. The aim is to reduce pressure on major reservoirs and make additional water available when required.

GWMC is preparing to meet the anticipated summer demand through advance storage, alternative sources and the restoration of old reservoirs.
