Guler levelled the tie within 45 seconds – only for Bayern to go back in front minutes later

Arda Guler capitalised on a Manuel Neuer mistake to silence the Allianz Arena with a long-range strike inside 45 seconds of Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich.

But after Real levelled the tie early on, Bayern were back in front a matter of minutes later through Aleksandar Pavlovic.

Real began the tie a goal down after a 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu last week but were level within a matter of seconds after a goal which was sensational for the strike as much as it was calamitious for Neuer’s mistake.

After Bayern kicked off proceedings, the ball found its way back to the Bayern goalkeeper, who put in a man of the match display in the first leg, who got the direction of his pass all wrong.

The 40-year-old played it straight into the path of Guler, who had a chance to shoot at goal with the stopper way out of position.

The Turkey international made no mistake from the best part of 35 yards as he hit one first time with his left foot as the ball flew in to make it 2-2 in the tie.

Pavlovic heads Bayern back in front in the tie

But only a few minutes later, Bayern were back in front in the tie and this time it was Andriy Lunin’s turn to make an error as he got nowhere near a corner which was swung in dangerously by Joshua Kimmich.

Lunin appeared to be already behind his line as the corner was swung in, allowing Aleksandar Pavlovic the easiest of chances to nod the equaliser to make it 1-1 on the night and 3-2 in the tie.

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid stats

  • Bayern’s victory in the first leg ended a nine-game winless run for them against Madrid in the Champions League (D2 L7)
  • Only once before have they won both legs of a knockout stage tie against Madrid in the competition, in the 2000/01 semi-finals (1-0 away, 2-1 at home)
  • The two players who have made the most defensive line-breaking passes in the Champions League this season are Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich (17) and Madrid’s Arda Guler (16)
  • Eight of Kimmich’s 17 have been for Michael Olise, which is the most from one player to a team-mate in this edition
  • Bayern’s Harry Kane has scored in his last four Champions League games (6 goals) and could equal the longest scoring streak by an English player in the competition (5, by Steven Gerrard in 2007/08)
  • Kane could also become the first player to score or assist in five consecutive Champions League appearances against Real Madrid (2 goals, 2 assists in his last 4)
  • Nine of Mbappe’s 14 goals in the Champions League this season have been away from home. Should he find the net in this game, the forward would be the first player ever to score at least 10 away goals in a single edition of the competition
  • Since the start of the 2013/14 season, Madrid (3) have the joint-most away wins against Bayern Munich across all competitions, despite only playing there four times during the period (also 3 wins in 17 games for Borussia Dortmund and 3 wins in 13 games for Borussia Monchengladbach)
  • Madrid are unbeaten in their last four away games against Bayern (W3 D1). In the Bundesliga era (since 1963/64), only two sides have managed to go five in a row without losing away to Bayern: Werder Bremen (5, from 1989/1992 and 2007/2010) and Koln (5, from 2003-2010)
  • Los Blancos have the most semi-final appearances in the history of the competition (33). If they are eliminated here, however, they will have failed to reach the semi-finals as many times in the last two seasons (2) as they did in the previous 14 editions combined, between 2010/11 and 2023/24 (2)
  • Vinicius Junior made 17 runs in behind the opposition defensive line during the first leg; the most by a player against Bayern in the Champions League this season
  • The winger has made the most runs in behind in this edition overall (150), as well as in the knockout stages (76)
