Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in just the second minute at Wembley, punishing a woeful defensive error from Marc Guehi to give Spain the lead against England in their UEFA Nations League clash.
Playing their first game since beating Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup, Spain were gifted an opener as Manchester City defender Guehi, turned towards his own goal under pressure from Yamal and conceded possession to the Barcelona superstar.
That allowed Yamal to surge through one-on-one with James Trafford, and he made no mistake in lifting the ball over the Leeds United goalkeeper with an effort that went in off the post.
Yamal’s strike, which crossed the line with one minute and 44 seconds on the clock, marked the third-quickest goal England have conceded at Wembley, following first-minute goals scored by Hungary in 1953 and Scotland in 1957.
Ferran Torres looked to have made it 2-0 in the ninth minute when he turned home from a Dani Olmo cross, only for his effort to be correctly disallowed for offside.
And England were then grateful to Trafford for preserving the single-goal deficit as he denied Torres with a fine save after the Paris Saint-Germain forward was played through for a gilt-edged chance to double Spain’s lead.
Torres was then guilty of an awful miss as he latched on to a perfectly weighted pass from Rodri, only to somehow skew his finish wide of the target.
England are winless in their last two matches at Wembley after drawing with Uruguay and losing 1-0 to Japan prior to the World Cup, and their start against the world and European champions offered little to suggest they would prevent that run being stretched to three games.
