Wayne Rooney has had quite the transformation – as he stepped out on the red carpet with wife Coleen Rooney yesterday evening.
The football legend has turned his back on the sport and his management roles after a series of unlucky runs. Now, he has turned to TV and alongside wife Coleen is fronting new Disney+ show The Real Rooneys, which premieres this week.
The new show marks a huge change for Wayne, away from football and his new focus on his family and his kids. His decision to step away from football management sees him getting more involved in the day to day lives of his kids, like school pick ups, whilst Coleen focuses on the biggest opportunities of her career, including her brand new Primark range.
In new snaps from the premiere, Wayne looks very different – as he shows off his new slimmed down look. It has been reported, ahead of a possible stint in the jungle, that he has stopped drinking and is ready to take on I’m A Celebrity and emulate his wife’s success. Coleen famously finished in second place back in 2024.
Wayne played football for Manchester United and England during his incredible sporting career. He later moved into managerial positions and most recently was appointed Plymouth boss in May 2024 after a disappointing three-month spell at Birmingham City.
He had originally planned to stay at Home Park, having signed a three-year contract. However, his time at the club ended in disaster as he was dismissed after just seven months. He has not held a managerial post in Plymouth.
Speaking about his decision to leave football management for good, he explained: “I was at a crossroads. Up till then my whole career had been playing or coaching. I knew if Plymouth didn’t pay off that would probably be my last management job. And when it didn’t pay off I had to come to terms with my future probably not being in the dugout.”
He added: “Like when I moved from Man United back to Everton, I accepted quickly that I’m not the level anymore to play for Man United, so you’re coming down again. So I’ve been quite good at not hanging round too long. I’ve seen players play for too long. After Plymouth, it was tough, there’s no denying that.”
As well as his new Disney+ show with wife Coleen, he also appears on The Wayne Rooney Show on the BBC and is the co-host of another Disney+ show Stick to United with YouTube star Mark Goldbridge.
It has also been reported he is in talks to appear on ITV hit show I’m A Celebrity. A source said of his decision to follow in his wife’s footsteps: “Wayne is in advanced talks for I’m A Celebrity and if they secure him, he’ll be their biggest signing in the show’s history.
“Coleen proved to be hugely popular when she took part two years ago and bosses think Wayne is going to match her success. ITV have been in negotiations with him for some time and are thrilled that they’ve reached this stage.”
