The FSU Seminoles beat the Boston College Eagles on Saturday, snapping their three-game losing streak. The Seminoles overcame a slow start to take a halftime lead, holding on to win 31-24 and getting their first road win since the 2023 season.
The second quarter was their best offensive performance of the season, with them scoring 21 points to take the lead. Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien was asked about it after the game and credited FSU’s rushing attack in his post-game press conference that Boston College posted on YouTube.
They ran the ball. We didn’t stop the run very well. Quarterback run, not sure how much we gave up. I think we gave up a decent amount of rushing yardage. It was tough, you know, it was tough.
The quarter was the turning point of the game, with FSU gaining 149 of their 380 yards. They ran the ball 14 times for 74 yards, with all three of their touchdowns coming on the ground. The Seminoles finished the game with 202 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Freshman Amari Thomas led the way with 98 yards and two scores.

O’Brien also talked about their trick plays, quarterback Mason McKenzie, and more. Read his full comments below.
Opening Statement
Yeah, we just didn’t make enough plays. Give Florida State credit, they made more plays than we did. They did some good things, we did some good things, but not enough.
On their trick-play touchdown
It was just a play that we had in our game plan that we thought would be good for these guys.
On their final offensive drive
Some of those are quarterback draws. He made some good decisions. Just didn’t have enough right there.
On FSU’s 21 points in the second quarter
They ran the ball. We didn’t stop the run very well. Quarterback run, not sure how much we gave up. I think we gave up a decent amount of rushing yardage. It was tough, you know, it was tough.

On quarterback Mason McKenzie
Yeah, he’s tough. He’s a great competitor. He did a lot of good things today. Like all of us, you know, he probably wishes he had a couple of plays back. Wish I had a couple of play calls back. But we’re in it together. And I wouldn’t want any other quarterback. He’s a hell of a competitor.
On the game coming down to just a few plays
You know, there were some of those. And we talk about margin of error all the time. You know, we can’t. We made some good plays today. We really did. We made some good plays, but not enough.
You know, whether it was drops or, you know, missed a block or, you know, whatever, didn’t break a tackle or bad play call, whatever it is. So, we just got to keep working and keep trying to get better.

On their defensive play calling in the second half
Yeah, no, look, I think we tried to mix it up. They ran the ball very well. We missed some tackles. You know, we were in there in the backfield a couple times. Couldn’t get them down, whether it was the back or the quarterback. You know, look, I think we tried to mix it up.
You know, we just didn’t have – we didn’t do enough. We didn’t do enough. And, you know, but again, like I said, I just told the team, you know, we’re in it together. We just keep working hard to get better.
On if he would have gone for two had they scored on the final drive
I would have gone for two. I definitely would have gone for two.

On them overcoming holding calls to score a touchdown
How many holding calls did they call on Florida State? One? I think they called one. That’s how I would answer that. I was at the game. That’s how I would answer that question. That’s how I would answer that question.
We did a good job on the drive. Great job on the drive of overcoming that. But how many holding calls were called on Florida State? One.
I think we had five called on us. Hopefully I don’t get fined.
On them using multiple trick plays
Yeah, no, I mean, he can do a lot of things. And we had some – you know, we had some decent ideas this week. And, you know, we always have something.

The ball has to get into a certain area of the field. It’s got to be a certain down and distance. It’s got to be a certain hash for some of those calls.
So, just, it worked out right. And the guys did a good job of executing those plays.
On FSU’s fake field goal for a touchdown
Obviously, we should have been. But they did a great job executing it. That was brutal by us. Terrible.
On their upcoming schedule
Yeah, the schedule is difficult. The schedule is just a very difficult schedule. You know, we don’t have any control over the schedule here. I have absolutely no control over the schedule at Boston College. We just try to do the best we can.

These kids fight their asses off every single day. They do. I love these kids. You know, they come into work every day. They sit right here. They’re never late. They’re always on time. They practice hard. They go to class.
They do everything we ask them to do. And, yeah, the schedule is difficult, just like it is for 130 other teams. And we just need to play the games when the games are supposed to be played.
I don’t have any control. I have no control over the schedule here at Boston College.
On becoming bowl eligible
Yeah, it’s going to be tough. Yeah, no doubt. It’s going to be a really difficult road to home.

On wide Kaelan Chudzinski getting back
Yeah, I thought he was better this week, Mike. Yeah, he was definitely better. I thought he did a good job. You know, he made some plays for us. We overthrew him. He was wide open. We overthrew him on one there. I wish we could have made that play, but we didn’t. But I thought he did some good things.
