New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party, boasting of 22.7 million followers, recently staged its first protest on 6th June at the designated protest site, Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The agenda of the protest was a demand for Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister, to resign over alleged CBSE and NEET paper leaks that have led to student suicides and growing frustration among students and parents alike. A hundred thousand people showed up with the numbers only increasing as time went on. While age was not a factor with regard to the attendees, Gen Z made up the majority.
Gen Z, the same generation that advocates for the environment, set a brilliant example by walking the talk after the protest. In a video circulating on social media, which has now been reposted by CJP’s official handle showed post protest scenes where students and youngsters stayed back to clean the protest site; they were seen walking around with garbage bags and picking up litter.
Data indicates that Gen Z makes up for 89% of India’s digital eco-content and is also equally active offline; the KBR Protest of Hyderabad, which was against the cutting down of trees in KBR National Park that houses endangered species, is testimony. Gen Z has long identified that protecting the environment comes at the cost of protecting their future, with recent rising levels of heat being grave evidence.
The environment remains an evergreen issue, with India ranking 176th out of 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index. The younger generation has come forward in recent years, all while bringing people together regardless of age or profession, an action that should be supported and encouraged across the country.
