If you’re a longtime Washington fan, this situation sounds eerily familiar. Remember when Kirk Cousins wanted to play for San Francisco in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach? Then-owner Dan Snyder and GM Bruce Allen were not going to allow Cousins to play for Shanahan, whom they fired after the 2013 season. So, instead of getting something in return for Cousins, Washington held onto him for spite.

Shanahan remains the 49ers head coach, and while he said he has no ill will toward Washington anymore, Aiyuk’s situation certainly brings back memories.
Aiyuk’s situation is very different from Cousins’. He wants out of San Francisco. And the Niners want him gone. But, Aiyuk suffered a severe knee injury in October 2024 and hasn’t played since. His current contract makes him untradeable. He hasn’t been around the 49ers in forever. However, Aiyuk reportedly wants to play for the Commanders, reuniting him with his best friend, Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. The two played together at Arizona State in 2019 and remain close.
No one has heard a peep from Aiyuk. The Commanders opened OTAs on Wednesday, and Daniels met with the media. Ben Standig asked Daniels about Aiyuk’s football future. Here’s his response:
“I don’t know, I don’t have a sense on it,” Daniels said. “That is my brother, and we have a personal relationship. His football future, that’s out of my control.”
That’s the perfect answer. What did you expect Daniels to say? Sure, he has an idea of what Aiyuk wants to do and how healthy Aiyuk is. But he also understands that nothing good could come from saying any more than he did.
