The U.S. Women’s Open, one of the USGA’s flagship events, has a rare playoff format. It’s the same one used by the U.S. Open.

No, it’s not a full 18 holes on Monday, and it’s not straight to sudden death.

Here’s what the USGA does:

  • If there are players tied after 72 holes of regulation, the format calls for a two-hole aggregate playoff.

  • The player with the lowest combined score on the two holes is declared the winner.

  • If two or more golfers have the same aggregate score after two holes, then the format shifts to sudden death.

The last USWO playoff was in 2018 when Ariya Jutanugarn won at Shoal Creek.
