If there’s anything better than being a professional athlete, it’s being a retired professional athlete who’s really good at golf. You get to extend your competitive career, only now the stakes are a little lower and the equipment is a lot different.

Brenden Morrow has taken that route, competing on The Pro Tour, an invitation-only circuit for retired professional athletes. His fellow former NHLer, Mike Commodore, can get around a golf course, too, though he’s not quite convinced his game is ready for The Pro Tour.

Morrow and Commodore recently appeared together as guests on GOLF’s Subpar podcast, in an episode recorded at the member-guest at the Bounty Club in Nashville. There, the pair sat with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz for a conversation that roamed from the rink to the driving range and beyond.

Morrow, a former NHL All-Star, is known for his putting prowess and his intensity on the course. His peers have even dubbed him “the angriest golfer on the planet,” a reference to the high standards he sets for himself. Being hard on himself has served him well on The Pro Tour, where he ranks among the top players. Commodore, meanwhile, had his own moment in the spotlight when he suggested he wasn’t good enough to compete on The Pro Tour.

Knost wasn’t buying it. He recalled a round at Gozzer Ranch in Idaho when Commodore was 6-under par standing on the 18th tee.

“I birdied the 17th hole and I knew where everyone stood,” Knost recalled. “Losing straight up to Commodore would have been tough to swallow.”

Luckily for Knost, Commodore sliced his final tee shot badly. “That ball is still going right,” Knost said.

The guys also swapped stories about hockey fights, including players they would have liked to take a swing at.
