What’s next for Alex Murdaugh after the court overturned his convictions?

The 57-year-old Alex Murdaugh was convicted back in 2023 of murdering his wife and son. Now, over three years later, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his conviction and even granted him the opportunity to face a new trial. For those unaware, the decision to overturn the conviction was a unanimous one.

To recap, Alex’s defence team had filed for an appeal soon after his initial conviction. Reportedly, at the time, they accused court clerk Rebecca “Becky Hill” of improperly influencing jurors. Rebecca pleaded guilty last year, in December 2025, to several counts. This includes obstruction of justice and perjury for showing sealed court exhibits to a reporter and then lying to a judge about it. Following her admission, Rebecca ended up receiving three years’ probation. Agreeing to Alex Murdaugh’s argument, in their opinion, the Supreme Court justices wrote:

“Hill, the Colleton County Clerk of Court, egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility and his defence, thus triggering the presumption of prejudice, which the State was unable to rebut. We are accordingly constrained to reverse the post-trial court’s denial of Murdaugh’s motion and remand for a new trial consistent with this opinion.”

Now that the conviction has been overturned, Alex Murdaugh will go to trial once again. The justices reportedly said that they wouldn’t review “every evidentiary issue Murdaugh raises.” Additionally, they also instructed the lower court to review “the admissibility of Murdaugh’s financial crimes,” to which he had pleaded guilty when he was first convicted in 2023.

More about the Alex Murdaugh murder trial

In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, 52, and son, Paul, 22, were shot to death near the dog kennels on a 1,770-acre property in Islandton, South Carolina. Reportedly, this is where the family’s hunting lodge was located. While the murder trial was ongoing, a video taken by Paul on his cell phone on the night of the murders was shown to the jury. This became the biggest evidence that allegedly placed Alex Murdaugh at the crime scene.

For the uninitiated, Alex had initially denied that he was present near the dog kennels in question on the night of the murders. But he ended up admitting to lying about his whereabouts that evening while testifying in his own defence. According to reports, Alex testified that the reason he lied about where he was that evening was that he was experiencing paranoia as a result of his drug addiction at the time. Although it is worth noting that even years later, to this day, Alex has constantly maintained that he did not kill his wife and son.

Alex Murdaugh’s conviction and life sentence

In 2023, after the conclusion of a six-week trial, Alex was found guilty of two counts of murder and weapons charges. This led him to be sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. The trial had attracted massive global attention, inspiring documentaries, podcasts, and even television specials. Well, even after his convictions were overturned, Alex is still serving 40 years in federal prison and 27 years in state prison simultaneously for the several financial crimes he had committed around the time of the murders.
