Chet Hanks added to the chaos of ComplexCon with his very public confrontation with Eric André. The actor cornered the comedian, and the video of their face-to-face conversation immediately went viral. With the buzz around their feud peaking, social media has grown intrigued about who Chet is. So, let’s take a quick look!
Who is Chet Hanks?
Chet Hanks, born Chester Marlon Hanks, is the eldest son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and the younger half-brother of Colin Hanks. He was born on August 4, 1990, and had a troubled childhood, with his parents even sending him away to a wilderness therapy program when he was in high school. Upon his return, Hank attended the Oakley School. He studied theater at Northwestern University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Like his parents, Chet Hanks was also drawn to the performing arts from a young age and made his acting debut at the age of 17 in the 2007 film, Bratz. He essayed the role of ‘Dexter’ in the film. Soon his career picked up, and he further expanded into television after achieving sobriety in the latter part of the 2010s. Chet played the role of ‘Charlie’ in the American version of Shameless, a role that made him a well-known face among the audience.
He even appeared on the hip-hop drama show Empire as rapper ‘Blake’, and made a cameo in Greyhound alongside his father, Tom Hanks. Chet has also dabbled in music, with his first record, White and Purple, coming out in 2011 while he was a student at Northwestern University. Talking about his personal life, Chet is a father to his and Tiffany Miles’ daughter, Michaiah.
He has often thanked his daughter for being the reason why he could overcome his battle with substance abuse. He has often been referred to as the “black sheep” of the Hank clan, given his controversial history. In 2015, he was wanted by British police after damaging a hotel room and inflicting USD 1,800 in damages.
Later in 2021, Chet Hanks posted a video to Instagram initially urging viewers to get vaccinated for COVID-19. However, he soon revealed that he was joking and said:
“You ain’t sticking me with that motherfucking needle. It’s the motherfucking flu. Get over it, okay?”
What happened between Chet Hanks and Eric André at ComplexCon?
ComplexCon is known for its chaos and crowd. However, when Chet Hanks spotted Eric André at the event, he apparently decided that it was the perfect opportunity to finally have a face-to-face conversation after three years. The video shared by TMZ shows Chet approaching Eric from behind and grabbing him by the shoulder. Eric initially appears cordial, but things quickly tense up.
Eric André’s expression changes as Chet Hanks confronts him about comments the comedian made after appearing on The Eric André Show. According to the media outlet, Eric looked completely confused about what Chet was referring to before eventually walking away with security. However, that was not all. Chet still called after him, but Eric just shrugged and yelled, “No memory whatsoever.”
Their argument eventually turned into another longstanding controversy over Chet Hanks’ use of a Jamaican accent and accusations that he was mocking Caribbean culture. However, this is not the first time Chet and Eric André have been at odds. In 2023, after the actor joined the comedian, Eric recalled the experience and told Rolling Stone that Chet acted dangerously on set, even riding a motorcycle around the production area and nearly knocking crew members off the ladders.
