Fans noticed how much Spatola’s son has grown and left comments on the post like “Wow! Your son has grown. You’re just the same smiley guy,” and “Someone keeps growing!”

A statement released by the Krzyzewski family confirming the death of Chris Spatola noted him as a devoted husband, father, and veteran. They said that they were heartbroken at his loss and called Spatola an important part of their family. The statement could be read as:
“There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola. Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family.”
Later, ESPN, where Chris Spatola worked as a college basketball analyst, revealed that he had passed away on September 21, 2026, at the age of 47. They said that Spatola was a thoughtful person and passionate about the sport. He was well respected among his colleagues, coaches, players, as well as fans. The statement added:
“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach, and broadcaster. He was thoughtful, prepared, and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players, and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Chris Spatola joined ESPN in 2015. Previously, he was a four-year starter at West Point. He ranked No. 10 all-time in Army’s career points list. Apart from his association with basketball, Chris Spatola served on active duty from 2002 to 2007. At the time, he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for exceptional combat performance. He also received the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding leadership.
