Who Is Tanner Horner’s Mother? Assault And Rape Victim, Faced Multiple Arrests Due To Drug Abuse

Tanner Horner, a FedEx delivery driver, faced a death sentence for the kidnapping and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand. It is one of the most high-profile and ruthless cases in Texas, and the recent death sentence of Tanner brought the emotionally charged case to a close. And amid the conviction, Tanner’s family is in the limelight.

Who is Tanner Horner?

Tanner Horner is a 37-year-old former delivery driver in Texas who was convicted of kidnapping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in 2022.  He worked as a contract driver, delivering packages. He became the central point of investigation after a seven-year-old girl, Athena Strand, went missing from Paradise, Texas.

Soon it was revealed that Tanner was the one who abducted the girl and killed her. During the investigation, Tanner revealed that he accidentally hit her with his vehicle and panicked, but he later pleaded guilty to the charges. Horner became the central figure in the criminal case that drew national attention in the United States due to the nature of the crime and the victim’s age.

Tanner Horner had a dark childhood with a drug-addicted mother

While Tanner Horner is leading the headlines after his death sentence, the focus has now shifted to his traumatic childhood. During the trial, when Tanner’s mother, identified as Mrs Horner, was questioned, she portrayed a very disturbing picture of the family and his upbringing. According to People, Tanner’s mother has survived abuse and rape at an early age.

As per a report by People, Tanner’s mother, Mrs Horner, was born to a teenage mother and faced abuse from her stepfather. From a very young age, Mrs Horner was addicted to drugs and dropped out of school in the ninth grade as she was sent to rehab for smoking marijuana. She later worked in a strip club and developed a heavy addiction.

Mrs Horner accepted her addiction and told the court, ‘I used everything I could get my hands on. It wasn’t a good lifestyle.’ While she was working in the strip club, Mrs Horner met Tanner’s father, Terry. She was 17 at that time, and he was 29. In a disturbing moment, Mrs Horner told the court that she was raped by Terry the night he met her for the first time. The two later married and had Tanner and another son.

Tanner Horner was arrested multiple times

In her testimony, Mrs Horner revealed that she was addicted to drugs and relied on them even when she was pregnant with Tanner. During Tanner’s childhood, Mrs Horner was arrested on several occasions for drug usage and prostitution. She served her time in prison and also went to rehab multiple times.

Not just this, Mrs Horner was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. It was not just a traumatic phase for Tanner, but he also had nowhere else to go. During his mother’s arrests, Tanner was taken care of by his grandmother. Mrs Horner told the court that once Tanner walked in to find her unconscious on the toilet after her drug episode. Speaking about the same, she stated:

“He was just a little guy, and he thought I was dead.”

What is the Athena Strand case, for which Tanner Horner was convicted?

The case involved a seven-year-old girl named Athena Strand, who went missing from her home in November 2022. Following her disappearance, a wide-scale search took place. Investigators later found that Tanner, who had been delivering packages to her house, had abducted her. Her body was discovered two days later in the area. The medical examiner said Athena died from blunt force trauma, smothering and strangulation.

Tanner stated that he panicked after he accidentally hit her, but prosecutors revealed his actions showed deliberate intent. Evidence presented in court, which also included audio recordings and video footage, indicated that Athena was unharmed at the time she was in his vehicle. In April 2026, Tanner pleaded guilty to the charges.

What happened during the trial? Will Tanner Horner be executed?

Athena Strand’s abduction and killing became one of the most talked-about high-profile crimes in the United States. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence detailing the sequence of events and the circumstances of the crime.

They alleged that Tanner was acquainted with the seven-year-old and fantasised about killing her before he abducted her in his truck. They also argued that Tanner fantasised about violent acts. As per the prosecutors:

“The experts told you that he fantasized about things. He fantasized about what he wanted to be. He fantasized about being a superhero. I think it’s reasonable to believe that he planned this as well. This was something that was in his mind.”

On the other hand, the defence highlighted Tanner’s dark family background, mental health, including claims of autism. They pleaded to keep his sentence to life imprisonment instead of death. Meanwhile experts testified on both sides regarding his psychological condition. After hearing nearly three weeks of testimony, a Texas jury sentenced Horner to death by lethal injection. The decision came after viewing the severity of the crime, which outweighed the factors presented by the defence.

However, as per the Texas law, all death penalty cases are automatically reviewed on appeal, which means Tanner’s case and sentence will undergo further legal scrutiny before an execution date is determined. Apart from the heinous act and the age of the victim, the case also drew attention as it highlights how courts evaluate claims related to conditions such as autism.
