The Testaments viewers are eager to learn more about Mabel Li, the actress behind strict Aunt Vidala

The Testaments fans are curious to learn more about Aunt Vidala actress Mabel Li.

The Handmaid’s Tale sequel is streaming now on Disney Plus, with six episodes available to watch now.

It follows a new generation of young women growing up in Gilead, guided by Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd), and other women who knew life before the oppressive system was put in place.

As fans learn more about Vidala as the show progresses, here’s everything you need to know about the actress behind the character.

Who is Mabel Li?

Mabel Li is an Australian actress with a multi-cultural background. Her parents are from Guangzhou in China, and moved to New Zealand, where Li was born, before eventually settling in Australia.

Li fell in love with acting at a young age but was hesitant about pursuing the career because of the lack of Asian representation on screen.

“I really enjoyed acting and I felt good at it in school, but it didn’t really feel like an option because there was no one who looked like me on TV,” she told SBS Food.

However, she chose to follow her dreams and impressively got accepted into Australia’s renowned National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). After graduating, Li made her small screen debut in the murder mystery drama The Tailings.

The Testaments marks one of her biggest roles to date. Although she is fairly new to the industry, Li already has famous ties.

Li appears to be friends with Bridgerton star Yerin Ha, who recently rose to mainstream fame on the Netflix period drama. The duo have been interacting on social media for years, sometimes commenting words of support on each other’s posts.

They were also pictured together in a 2018 photoshoot seemingly championing women of colour in the acting industry. The picture shows the pair alongside five women, including Heartbreak High star Chika Ikogwe.

It’s unclear how Li and Ha know each other, but they both studied at NIDA.
