Kate Ferguson was an Australian actress. She is best known for being married to Kjell Nilsson. The duo first met in 1980 after the actor moved from Sweden to Australia. The primary purpose of his move was to coach and train weightlifters preparing for the Moscow Olympics. Soon their relationship developed, and Kate joined Kjell in Sweden, where they got married. According to those close to the couple, Kate believed that her husband’s impressive physical presence made him perfect for the film industry.

In turn, Kate encouraged him to return to Australia and pursue acting instead of limiting himself to athletics. Soon, her encouragement proved life-changing when Kjell was cast as ‘Lord Humungus’ in George Miller’s Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, a career-defining role. Kate also joined her husband in the 1982 musical comedy, The Pirate Movie, making it one of their few times that they shared the screen.

Although Kate stayed away from the spotlight in her final years, she was still a significant part of Kjell’s life. According to industry records, Kate died in Australia on July 2, 2021. Notably, it is exactly five years before Nilsson’s death.

Kjell Nilsson passed away after a long health battle

Kjell Nilsson died peacefully in his sleep on July 2, 2026, at his home in Queensland. His death came after a nearly four-and-a-half-year battle with Kidney disease. The actor’s family confirmed the news in a social media post.

According to those close to him, the actor faced several years of health challenges related to his kidneys. He was given a few months to live in 2022, but he outlived them. Eventually, a few days ago, he had decided to take dialysis treatment shortly before his death to regain control over his body and pain. They explained that Kjell’s final days were full of peace, gratitude, and acceptance.

In fact, Kjell’s family also reflected on this serious health battle decades earlier. Around 40 years ago, Kjell developed severe blood clotting in his legs. Therefore, he was advised to undergo a double amputation. Instead, he chose to keep his legs despite the warning that they would remain permanently compromised.

Kjell Nilsson’s family credited his determination, weight training, and remarkable resilience. He believed all these factors enabled him to live decades longer than expected. They also confirmed that a memorial ceremony will be held, with many details to be announced on a later date.
