Who Was Kristin Smart, And Why Is Police Searching Her Killer’s Family Home Nearly 30 Years Later?

Nearly three decades after a 19-year-old Kristin vanished without a trace, the case has reignited conversation as investigators are once again searching property connected to her convicted killer’s family.

Why have the officials returned to Kristin Smart’s convicted killer’s family home?

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, law enforcement authorities executed a fresh search warrant at the Arroyo Grande, California, home of Susan Flores, the mother of Kristin Smart’s convicted killer, Paul Flores. This year, May 25 will mark exactly 30 years since the 19-year-old went missing after attending an off-campus party at a fraternity house.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Tony Cipolla, confirmed that a county judge had approved a search warrant for the property. The department shared photos of the property on X and confirmed that the new search was indeed related to Smart’s disappearance. Reinstating their promise to bring Smart back home, the department stated:

“The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an additional investigation into the property in the 500 block of East Branch Street in Arroyo Grande. This investigation is related to the Kristin Smart disappearance. This activity is the result of a search warrant signed by a Superior Court judge. The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to bringing Kristin home to her family.”

According to investigators, Paul Flores was the last person seen walking with Kristin Smart near the Santa Lucia Hall dorms at Cal Poly after an off-campus party in the early hours of May 25, 1996. Smart was reported missing later that day, and her body has never been recovered. Following news of the latest search warrant, social media users began urging authorities to thoroughly search the property, even “dig up the entire yard” if needed, with many convinced Smart’s remains could finally be found there.

Who was Kristin Smart? All about her disappearance and murder

Kristin Smart, 19, was a freshman at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo when she disappeared over Memorial Day weekend in 1996. She was last seen in the early hours of May 25 (around 2:00 a.m.) after attending an off-campus party near campus. Witnesses said she had been heavily intoxicated when they last saw her, and was allegedly struggling to walk after the party. Three of her classmates helped escort her back to her university dorm.

However, by the time they reached the dorm, the group had split, and Smart was left with her classmate, Paul Flores. That was the last time anyone ever saw her. Investigators later revealed that Flores appeared out of nowhere that night and offered to drop her off at her dorm. Hours later, she was reported missing, and her body was never recovered. Flores claimed he watched Smart walk toward her dorm safely.

How the Kristin Smart case unfolded over the years

The disappearance of Kristin Smart quickly became one of California’s most infamous unsolved cases of disappearance, stretching across three decades before investigators finally secured a murder conviction. After she was reported missing in May 1996, investigators promised her family that they wouldn’t stop at any end until they found their daughter. In 2002, Kristin Smart was declared dead in absentia, and her body was never found.

Paul Flores was the last person reported to have seen and escorted Smart to her dorm, so he became the prime suspect in the case. In the years that followed, investigators repeatedly focused on Flores, but due to the lack of physical evidence in the case, no charges could be filed. However, the suspicion surrounding him only intensified when officials noticed inconsistencies in his statements over time. Reports of Flores’ prior allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards women further fuelled the suspicion.

From the very beginning of the investigation, investigators had suspected that Paul Flores had sexually assaulted Smart on May 25, 1996, but it took another two decades before Flores was arrested. In 2021, authorities arrested Paul and his father, Ruben Flores, after new searches uncovered forensic evidence beneath a deck at the family’s Arroyo Grande property.

How was Paul Flores finally convicted of Kristen Smart’s murder?

When the officials searched the Arroyo Grande home of Ruben Flores in March 2021, they uncovered a 6-foot by 4-foot void under the deck and found traces of human blood in the soil sample. There were fibres in the soil that reportedly matched the colours of the clothing Kristin Smart was wearing when she disappeared.

A year later, Paul Flores was convicted of first-degree murder and, in 2023, sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Ruben Flores, who was accused of helping to cover up the crime, was also charged but later acquitted. During the trial, San Luis Obispo County Deputy District Attorney Christopher Peuvrelle told jurors that Paul Flores sexually assaulted Smart in his dorm room before killing her, and argued that her body had initially been buried at the family property before being moved. 

What prompted the new search warrant after all this time?

Despite the conviction, Kristin Smart’s body has never been recovered. The case has continued to grab public attention for the numerous unanswered questions surrounding her disappearance. However, it wasn’t until the success of Chris Lambert’s Your Own Backyard podcast, a documentary series exploring the disappearance, that the case got renewed public attention and even led to new witnesses coming forward. 

With the new developments in the case, the podcast’s official page on X (formerly Twitter) informed users about the search warrant at Susan Flores’ house. Sharing photos from the scene, the page wrote:

“San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is currently executing a search warrant at the Arroyo Grande home of Susan Flores. She was served on her doorstep at 7:05 am and left at 8:02 am.”
