Meet Suman Kalyanpur’s husband, Ramanand Kalyanpur

Ramanand Kalyanpur, who was widely known as Suman Kalyanpur’s husband, was a Mumbai-based businessman. Ramanand and Suman tied the knot in 1958. The couple stayed together until 2008, when Ramanand left for the heavenly abode. It is worth mentioning that Ramanand was Suman’s biggest support system after their marriage. Ramanand, just like a dedicated husband, accompanied Suman to every recording session.

In a 2015 interview with The Indian Express, Suman shared that she was married to a joint family that had 15 members. She felt fortunate that her in-laws allowed her to continue with her singing career. Suman admitted that she was not comfortable handling the business side of her career, and thus her husband took care of those matters. She was quoted as saying:
“I was married into a joint family that had 15 members. I was just glad that they were allowing me to continue. Also, unlike other singers, I wasn’t good at negotiating contracts and talking to people, so that was completely handled by my husband.”

“It wasn’t considered safe for girls to venture out. Ma and Pitaji used to love bhajans. But we were not allowed to sing outside the house. I didn’t have the permission. Singing could be done at home.”
She revealed that eventually, some of her neighbours asked her to sing for Ganpati Mahotsav. However, it was her neighbour, DB Jog’s Marathi film, Shauchi Chandni, that led Suman Kalyanpur to a recording studio. DB Jog was a friend of Suman’s father, and thus, permission was granted. However, the film never took off. When she was 16, iconic singer, Talat Mehmood heard her sing at a college function and lauded her performance. Suman then bagged a song in Darwaaza and debuted alongside Talat Mehmood.
When Suman Kalyanpur opened up about the uncanny similarity between her voice and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice

Back in 2015, Suman Kalyanpur opened up about the uncanny similarity between her voice and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Suman stated that she was quite influenced by Lata and mentioned that during her college days, she used to sing Lata’s songs. She admitted that her voice was thin and fragile. And when Radio Ceylon relayed the songs, they never announced the names, creating confusion. She was quoted as saying:
“I was quite influenced by her. In my college days, I used to sing her songs. Meri aawaaz nazuk aur patli thi. Also, when Radio Ceylon relayed the songs, the names were never announced. Even the records sometimes gave the wrong name. Maybe that caused more confusion.”
Rest in peace, Suman Kalyanpur.
