What makes a museum worth travelling across the world for? In Patna, Bihar Museum has made a strong case for itself. It has been ranked ninth among the world’s 100 best museums in 2026, ahead of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, popularly known as The Met, and Paris’s Louvre.

Worth a Journey, an independent travel guide based in Munich, Germany, compiled the ranking using visitor reviews, data analysis, and on-site assessments. Bihar Museum is the highest-ranked museum in Asia on its list and the only Indian institution to feature in the top 100.

But beyond the ranking, what can visitors expect to find here? Think ancient sculptures, archaeological treasures, folk art and contemporary architecture, all coming together to tell the story of a region whose cultural legacy stretches back centuries.

A modern space for Bihar’s ancient stories

Established in 2015, Bihar Museum was created to give the state’s rich collection of historical artefacts a larger space for display. The existing Patna Museum already held a substantial collection, but a new institution offered an opportunity to present Bihar’s heritage on a much larger scale.

Spread across more than 13 acres, the museum was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, in collaboration with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects. The result is a contemporary building with expansive galleries, open courtyards and landscaped spaces that make exploring the museum an experience in itself.

Inside, the exhibits take visitors through Bihar’s history, from its early civilisations to 1764. Ancient sculptures, archaeological finds, coins and manuscripts offer glimpses into the lives, beliefs and artistic traditions of people who lived here long before the modern state took shape.

The museum also makes room for living traditions, with galleries dedicated to folk and contemporary art. Together, the collections tell a story that goes beyond dynasties and dates to explore how people have expressed themselves through art and culture.

What makes it worth the journey?

For families travelling with children, the museum has a dedicated Children’s Gallery featuring subjects such as animals, folk art, culture and science. It offers younger visitors a way to engage with the exhibits beyond simply looking at objects behind glass.

The Diaspora Gallery explores Bihar’s connections with communities beyond the state, adding another dimension to its history. And for visitors who want to sample local flavours along the way, the museum also has a restaurant serving Bihari cuisine.

The architecture is another reason to spend time here. The interplay of indoor galleries, open spaces and landscaped courtyards gives visitors room to pause between exhibits. Rather than treating history as a collection of artefacts to hurry past, the museum offers several ways to explore it at one’s own pace.

For anyone visiting Patna, it is an opportunity to discover Bihar through its art, people and past, all under one roof.

The company Bihar Museum keeps

Bihar Museum’s ninth-place ranking puts it among some of the world’s best-known cultural institutions. Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología leads the 2026 list, followed by Madrid’s Museo del Prado and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

Russia’s State Hermitage Museum ranks fourth, while Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum takes fifth place. Turkey’s Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum is sixth, followed by Poland’s Museum of the Second World War and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, USA. The Met ranks tenth, while the Louvre is placed 31st.

For its 2026 edition, Worth a Journey says it analysed more than one million venues to create 36 lists of the world’s best places across travel and hospitality categories. Its museum ranking draws attention to destinations that may not always receive the same global recognition as their more famous counterparts.

A reason to discover Bihar differently

A museum visit can change how we see a place. A sculpture becomes a clue to an older civilisation; a piece of folk art opens a window into everyday life; and an architectural space brings centuries of history into the present.

At Bihar Museum, these stories come together in a setting that is distinctly contemporary yet deeply rooted in the region it represents.

Its place among the world’s top 10 offers travellers another reason to put Patna on their itinerary. More importantly, it invites them to look beyond familiar tourist destinations and discover the many layers of India’s cultural heritage, one gallery at a time.
