Jess Hatzis is an entrepreneur and author. Ahead, she talks about how she’s influenced by the ’90s when it comes to her fashion choices, and why she doesn’t like dressing like everybody else.

Hatzis says her “childhood wardrobe was very much defined by the 1980s and ’90s.”Liane Hurvitz

I’d describe my style as evolving, polished and embellished. The most recent addition to my wardrobe is a navy pinstripe diamante suit from On Parks, one of my favourite labels for interesting pieces. I also like Sir for easy summer pieces and St. Agni for tailored classics. There’s quite a bit of old Celine in my wardrobe and a big collection of items from obscure labels because I don’t like dressing like everybody else.

On a first date, I’d wear Anine Bing leather pants with a fine knit and a heel. On a plane, it’s Assembly Label barrel-leg pants and a long-sleeve tee by Cos or Beare Park. For the red carpet, I’d wear Schiaparelli or archival Thierry Mugler – a girl can dream.

My favourite fashion era is any time pre-Instagram; there’s been a homogenisation of how we dress because we’re all consuming the same content. I take a lot of inspiration from ’90s icons like Calista Flockhart and Sarah Jessica Parker, particularly their red carpet looks.

The three essential items in my wardrobe are a white Uniqlo baby tee, a cashmere sweater and a big fluffy jacket. I have a large collection sourced from all over the world, including a huge cream coat and a bright blue jacket made of faux feathers. They’re fun; I look ridiculous, but I love that I don’t blend in.

The shoes I wear most are a pair of blue suede clogs with an evil eye by Italian label Post&Co, and Toteme kitten-heel boots.

My go-to jewellery is a big stack of rings. I like to mix fine, elegant pieces such as my black diamond engagement ring with chunky costume jewellery, including a ring with a big cobalt stone. I have pieces from Palazzo, Alighieri and Sarah & Sebastian.

My childhood wardrobe was very much defined by the 1980s and ’90s. I was obsessed with my pedal pushers and find it funny that they’ve made a comeback, now as capri pants.

My worst fashion mistake was wearing too much fake tan. It destroys even the most amazing outfit. I’ve always loved a scarf; I used to wear them as a top, but it’s too dangerous now with small kids pulling at my clothes, so I’ve converted to headscarves. They bring whimsy to an outfit and I don’t have to do my hair.

I sleep in silk Bond Street pyjamas, and it has to be a matching set. Feeling put together at the end of the day is calming to me. I’d never wear anything made from polyester.

My wish list has far too many things on it, but at the top is a Róhe leather jacket.

On a typical working day, I am usually overdressed in a sculptural embellished pencil skirt with a fine knit and vintage brooches. It’s my chance to wear my precious things without getting avocado smooshed on them. The weekends are more relaxed; I’ll wear my Nili Lotan “Shon” pants, a Kinga Csilla long-sleeve tee and thongs.
