Amanda, West and Ciara. Those names probably didn’t mean anything to you a month or so ago, but talk about the trio has been dominating social media feeds recently. Along with the “leak” that almost destroyed Summer House, the reality show they appear on.
After running under the radar for almost a decade, this US series is suddenly everywhere. Even Jon Hamm is obsessed with it. In typical reality TV fashion, it’s all thanks to a scandal – one that happened to break off-screen, and has since rocked fans to their core.
The most recent season of Summer House is still rolling out, with its highly anticipated reunion episode – which reportedly addresses the scandal head-on – set to land in late May.
So, if you can’t escape the relentless TikTok commentary and still have no clue what’s actually going on, here’s everything you need to catch up on the drama.
What is Summer House?
Summer House is a reality TV show produced by Bravo, the American reality juggernaut behind The Real Housewives franchise.
Its premise is simple: a group of New Yorkers spend the summer in a Hamptons share house, where they endure friendship fall-outs, break-ups and an exorbitant amount of alcohol.
The show has found a small but dedicated following since its premiere in 2017. However, it never quite reached the heights of the Real Housewives series, or even the scandal-ridden Vanderpump Rules. That is until season 10.
Why is everyone talking about it?
On March 31, cast members Amanda Batula and West Wilson publicly confirmed they had been covertly dating. That might sound innocuous, but Wilson used to date one of Batula’s best friends, Ciara Miller (who also features on the show). Batula also recently separated from her husband, Summer House cast member Kyle Cooke, in January.
While there’s no evidence of infidelity, fans are frothing over the messiness of the love triangle (or quadrangle?). A key plot-point of this 10th season is the dramatic breakdown of Batula and Cooke’s marriage, with Wilson often operating as a mediator for the couple.
Wilson and Miller are also shown making amends following their 2023 break-up, with the occasional flirt suggesting lingering romantic feelings. And who comforts Miller whenever she feels anxious about potentially getting hurt by Wilson again? Batula.
“It was never our intention to purposely hide anything,” Wilson and Batula said in a shared statement on Instagram in March. “Given the complicated relationship dynamics involved and the scrutiny that comes with being on a reality show, we need a little space to process things privately before speaking on it.
“We’ve shown up for each other as friends over the years, through all the highs and lows, and what’s developed recently was the last thing either of us expected.”
The revelation has fractured Miller’s friendship with both Wilson and Batula. Meanwhile, many fans have declared their allegiance to “#TeamCiara”, including A-list stars like Hamm and seemingly even Rihanna.
“It’s one thing to experience hurt behind closed doors,” Miller told Glamour last month. “To experience it so publicly is another layer, and then to have to see what you thought was your life still play out in season 10. It’s a major mindf—.”
The conflict reportedly comes to a head during the reunion, which airs on May 26. However, it was revealed last week that audio from the episode had been leaked on social media – a first for Bravo reunions. This sent additional shockwaves through the Summer House fandom, and further signalled the feverish interest in the scandal. An investigation was immediately launched, and eventually determined the culprit was part of the production team.
How does anyone keep up with this?
Reality TV is dependent on scandals. However, an increasing number are now occurring off-camera or between seasons.
Before Summer House, Vanderpump Rules grappled with #Scandoval, the affair between Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss in 2023 that destroyed Sandoval’s long-term relationship with fellow cast member Ariana Madix. The affair wasn’t captured in the show’s 10th season and production had to resume to document the fallout of the off-camera action in a special finale episode before the three-part reunion.
Elsewhere, the breakdown of the relationship between Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky – previously the most stable marriage on The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills – was announced after filming for season 13 had already wrapped, which meant producers had to “catch up” in the season’s reunion episode.
It takes time to produce reality shows, but the real-life drama of cast members continues. The current frenzy around Summer House shows how challenging it is for productions to keep up with both the action among the cast and their fans’ appetite for content.
To fill this void between episodes and seasons, a wave of intertextual productions have emerged – from talk shows such as Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and MAFS: After the Dinner Party to podcasts such as Watch What Crappens. There’s also the constant discourse on social media, including cast members’ posts and Reddit forums dedicated to discussing scandals. Reality fans are often digging into the drama well before it lands on-screen.
At its best, this can generate great publicity and even content for the show. For example, a remark Erika Jayne made about Dorit Kemsley’s marriage at BravoCon (the Comic-Con of reality TV) became a key plot-point in season 13 of The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills. But it can be a lot for fans to keep up with. And, for shows with a regular cast, a big splashy scandal can end up hurting the series.
After attempting to continue with its original cast post-Scandoval, Vanderpump Rules realised it required a total revamp. Madix refused to be in the same room as her ex, and Leviss quit, making it impossible to film a show hooked on group gatherings. The recast 12th season divided viewers, with some critics arguing it transformed into a dating show.
So, what now?
Summer House is still in the thick of the scandal, meaning it will probably enjoy rock-solid ratings during season 10, and fans feverishly seek hints of Wilson and Batula’s blossoming romance. No one has seen Batula, Wilson and Miller in the same room since the scandal broke, making the reunion a must-see.
Will Miller, Wilson and Batula come to some kind of resolution before the sun sets on Summer House? Well, there’s already a new spin-off, In the City, set to premiere on May 19 (the day of the Summer House finale) and rumours of another series to follow. This won’t be the end of the story.
Summer House (season 10) is streaming on Binge and Hayu. Older seasons are also available on 7Plus.
