However, now, questions around his late-night last rites have surfaced. For the unversed, Nana was cremated at 11:30 PM, and his son, Malhar Patekar, has explained the reason behind it.
Nana Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, reveals the reason behind his late-night cremation
Nana Patekar, who died following a cardiac arrest on October 8, 2026, in Goa, was cremated with full state honours at his Nanchi Wadi farmhouse in Donje village on the outskirts of Pune later that night. The family performed the last rites around 11:30 PM. However, the late-night cremation led many to wonder why the family had chosen to have the last rites at such a time.
Recently, Nana Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, explained why the family held the last rites so late at night. The mourning son revealed that the family had expected the mortal remains of Nana to reach the village earlier. However, a delay in transportation meant the final journey took longer than they expected.

Malhar Patekar added that since the actor had passed away at the crack of dawn and several hours had already passed, the family decided to complete the last rites on Thursday, October 8, 2026, itself. For the unversed, according to reports, Nana Patekar died at 5:20 AM at the Manipal Hospital in Goa. Malhar was quoted as saying:
“We were in Goa, and his mortal remains were to be brought to the farmhouse in the village. We expected it to arrive earlier, but it took us some time. We proceeded (with the last rites today) because the tragedy occurred early this morning, so a significant amount of time had already passed. That is why we decided to go ahead with it today.”
The reason why many have found it unusual is that according to Hindu customs, cremation is generally performed during the day. According to the traditions, it is believed that cremation should be avoided after sunset. However, practices vary across regions, communities and family traditions, and circumstances surrounding a death may also influence the time of the funeral.
Malhar Patekar reflects on his father, Nana Patekar’s legacy
In the same conversation, Nana Patekar’s son also spoke about the legacy his father had left behind. In a candid moment, Malhar Patekar revealed that the actor’s contribution to society would endure through the initiatives he championed. He shared that a person like his father never really leaves and lives through their work even after their mortal body is gone. He was quoted as saying:
“His mindset was always consistent; he often repeated the line, ‘Let’s get together in the name of humanity and work for the betterment of the world.’ Through our organisation, work was already underway in the water sector, and large-scale initiatives in education and health had begun in Kashmir as well. Thirdly, he assigned specific responsibilities to everyone before he left.”

Nana Patekar was declared dead at 5:20 AM after he couldn’t be revived despite their best efforts. It was the actor’s caretaker who had gone to the hospital around 4:18 AM to get help. However, by the time the paramedics reached the residence, he was already on the ground, almost unresponsive. The medics performed CPR for a long time. However, they could not revive him.
According to reports, Nana Patekar passed away after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence. His mortal remains were brought to Pune airport, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid his respects, before being transported by road to the farmhouse in Donje village. The actor was cremated with full state honours in the presence of political leaders and members of the film industry, and a 21-gun salute by female police officers marked the ceremony.
RIP, Nana Patekar.
