'Widow's Bay's' Evil Origin Explained, A Trip To 1702 Reflects On The Town's Horrifying Dark Mystery

Widow’s Bay is an American comedy horror television series created by Katie Dippold for Apple TV. The series stars Matthew Rhys as ‘Tom Loftis’, Kate O’Flynn as ‘Patricia’, Kevin Caroll as ‘Bechir Clemmons’ and Dale Dickey as ‘Rosemary’. However, in the latest episode of the show, we got to see some new faces, including Betty Gilpin as ‘Sarah Westcott Warner’ and Hamish Linklater as ‘Richard Warren’.

The recent episodes of Widow’s Bay, titled Our History and Seasickness, dives deep into the town’s past and how it shaped the story. So, as fans enjoy Episodes 6 and 7 of the show, let’s take a quick look at what the flashbacks have revealed about the show.

Our History takes Widow’s Bay back to 1702

As the latest episodes of Widow’s Bay were released on May 27, 2026 (ET), they have already left the audience stunned. The spooky standalone episode titled Our History, takes the audience back to where it all began and is the most interesting thing they’ve seen in a while. The episode jumps all the way back to 1702 during the earliest days of the island settlement. And there are two characters that carry the entire episode, ‘Sarah’ essayed by Betty Gilpin and ‘Richard’ played by Hamish Linklater. ‘Sarah’, who is considered an over-the-hill sinner by the cruel 18th-century standards, had arrived by boat to marry the village’s widowed founder, ‘Richard’.

However, things immediately go downhill. And as if the latter’s wedding vows were not unsettling enough, ‘Sarah’ quickly becomes terrified by the increasingly disturbing events around her. Her creepy husband’s creepier nightly ritual and violent tendencies, combined with the disappearing villagers and hooded figures stalking the town, create an eerie atmosphere, becoming a nightmare scenario for the woman who was made to believe that remaining unmarried would have been a worse fate than death.

The dark secret that keeps haunting Widow’s Bay

Done with ‘Richard’s’ terrors, ‘Sarah’ joins forces with townspeople in an attempt to stop her husband. However, amid the latter’s increasingly frantic speeches, the truth about Widow’s Bay slowly begins to emerge. According to him, the island survives only because of a pact they made with God that demands regular sacrifices. The agreement allegedly explains why anyone born on the island cannot survive once they leave its shores. However, without him continuing the pact, it becomes a dead zone with the island-born residents being doomed to die. It soon becomes a haunting revelation hanging over the episode’s final moments as we see ‘Sarah’ row into the darkness with ‘Richard’s’ children, absolutely unsure whether freedom was even a possibility for them.

Betty Gilpin and Hamish Linklater carry the weight of the episode.

Betty Gilpin is the reason the episode seems to hold together. Gilpin is often known as one of the most dependable actors of the streaming era. She is shown as someone with sharp instincts, unmistakable presence and perfectly timed deliveries, which often keep the audience hooked. Ever since she appeared in GLOW, Gilpin has consistently risen through the ranks of content as one of the most prominent names in the industry. While not every project she appears in might be a masterpiece, it’s safe to say that her phenomenal acting is never the reason for the same.

So, when the actress joined Widow’s Bay, it was clear the episode would leave us on the edge of our seats, and honestly? It did just that. Meanwhile, Hamish Linklater’s unsettling patriarchal role keeps us terrifyingly hooked; he is equally as excellent as Gilpin and brings quite a menacing energy to ‘Richard’. Together, the two performances carry most of the episode, making it honestly chilling to watch.

Why Episode 6: Our History was a standout episode for Widow’s Bay?

Our History works both as an important prequel for the show and as a standalone horror story that explores gender roles and marriage as a terrifying imprisonment. Despite knowing humankind’s history, the episode is chillingly terrifying to watch, especially if you are a woman. Betty Gilpin’s openly feminist perspective lends her role as ‘Sarah’ additional weight, while at several points she feels less like a traditional character and more like a modern woman trapped in the past, making it even more horrifying to watch than simply being terrified of the supernatural. Additionally, the episode also belongs to a growing category of exceptional standalone episodes that Apple TV+ series seem unusually skilled at producing.

Some mysteries remain unsolved despite the flashback

While Our History offers a sneak peek into how the town turned deadly, the lingering question about Widow’s Bay remains unanswered. The audience still doesn’t fully understand what exactly has such a tight grip on the island, whether it’s the Devil or God, and this becomes a bitter comic perspective due to its contrast. However, another thing that the fans noticed was how this is now the second series in which Hamish Linklater becomes involved with supernatural religious forces while trying to protect an isolated island community. Nonetheless, maybe not every mystery needs to be explained in the show, and the ambiguity is what will keep the audience starving for more.
