William Shatner recently made headlines after the actor revealed he survived stage 4 malignant melanoma after the cancer spread to his lungs and brain. The 95-year-old Star Trek actor and his daughter, Melanie, both fought stage 4 cancer at the same time. William is one of the renowned stars in Hollywood, but the actor underwent one of the most tragic phases when he lost his third wife, Nerine Kidd.
William Shatner found his wife, Nerine Kidd, lying dead in their pool
William Shatner had been married four times, but when his third wife, Nerine Kidd, passed away, it devastated the actor. Nerine was an alcoholic and was found dead by Shatner in 1999. After her death, the autopsy reports claimed that there was a huge amount of alcohol found in her system.
After Nerine’s death, Shatner was so heartbroken that he had suicidal thoughts. Penning his emotions in his memoir, he wrote:
“My grief was overwhelming. This was the type of pain that makes you think either I’m simply going to die or I’m going to kill myself…I found her in our pool and lifted her out of the water. The emergency responders rushed to the house, but there was nothing that could be done. I saw her body lying there in the moonlight.
Nerine underwent treatment for alcohol and even went to rehab, but nothing happened. She was addicted. However, Shatner’s best friend, Leonard Nimoy, who starred with him in Star Trek, warned him about Nerine’s alcoholism. Revealing the advice he got from Nimoy, Shatner revealed:
“He said just one sentence, ‘Bill, you do know that Nerine is an alcoholic.’ I’m not sure what Leonard expected me to say. ‘I know she is,’ I told him. ‘But I love her.’ Leonard didn’t speak for a minute, and then he said, sadly, ‘Well, Bill, then you are in for a rough ride.’
William Shatner and Nerine Kidd had an age gap of 28 years
William met model Nerine Kidd in 1994 while directing a TV project. It was love at first sight for Shatner, who had an age gap of 28 years with Nerine. He was attracted to her charming personality and sharp wit. The couple tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in Pasadena, California, in November 1997.
Soon after their marriage, Shatner realised the impact of Narine’s alcoholism. He desperately orchestrated multiple visits to elite rehabilitation facilities, including the famous Betty Ford Clinic, but it was of no use as Narine was totally into it and couldn’t come out. Narine’s alcoholism affected their marriage, and within ten months, Shatner filed for divorce in October 1998, thinking that Narine would stop drinking after this.
However, on August 9, 1999, when William Shatner came back to his home after visiting his daughters, he couldn’t find Narine anywhere in the house. He then walked into the backyard and found her body lying motionless at the bottom of the deep end of their pool. Shatner, who was 68 at that time, dived into the pool and lifted his 40-year-old wife’s body. He administered CPR and dialled 911, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Narine’s death by drowning in the pool raised many doubts, as she was a great swimmer and used to swim in their pool daily. However, the autopsy and toxicology revealed Narine’s blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal driving limit. The report revealed that Narine was under the heavy influence of alcohol when she dived into the pool. She struck her head on the bottom of the pool and lost consciousness, which led to her drowning.
