Mumbai: A woman confronted Maharashtra cabinet minister Girish Mahajan over traffic disruption caused by a BJP protest in Mumbai’s Worli area on Tuesday evening. The demonstration, held in support of women’s reservation in Parliament, led to heavy congestion and stranded commuters. Social activist Anjali Damania, Congress leaders and Sharad Pawar led NCP’s Rohit Pawar criticised the ruling party for holding the protest on a busy road.

The BJP on Tuesday had organised a protest in support of women’s reservation in Parliament in Mumbai’s posh Worli area. The protest caused a major traffic jam, with several commuters reportedly stranded for hours.

On her way to pick up her child from school, the woman found herself stuck in traffic. Frustrated by the delay, she stepped out of her car and confronted Mr Mahajan, asking him to clear the road in the presence of the media. Subsequently, a video of the incident went viral on social media inviting strong criticism from opposition parties and the social activists.

In the social video, the woman was seen telling the minister, “There are hundreds of people waiting. You should speak in empty ground instead of blocking the traffic on the road. Get out of here (public place)….clear the traffic, which has been more than an hour. I am stuck here for more than an hour.”

The police were seen asking the woman to keep the tone down.

Demanding an FIR registration against the BJP leaders for blocking the traffic, Ms Damania said, “I am extremely upset at the way the BJP protest was permitted. What were the police doing? Is this how citizens deserve to be harassed? The woman in the video was trying to ask questions to the officers who didn’t even look at her. Those officers should be issued a show cause notice immediately and FIR should be registered against BJP leaders for blocking traffic.”

Senior Congress leader Nana Patole said that this is arrogance of power. “The power is being misused for harassing the people. This is the first instance where a minister was abused by a woman,” he said.

NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar said that the woman had exposed the BJP’s drama.

Speaking with the reporters, Mr.Mahajan acknowledged that such issues can arise during protests and said precautions would be taken in the future. “I can understand the woman’s anger. But her language was inappropriate,” he said.
