Nellore: The battle for municipal chairperson posts in the erstwhile SPSR Nellore district has turned into a women-centric high-voltage contest between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
From Naidupeta and Sullurpeta to Venkatagiri, Atmakur, and Buchireddypalem, the civic polls have evolved into prestigious battles, with senior leaders throwing their weight behind their respective nominees. The contests have brought political family legacies, community equations, and organisational strength of the rival parties into sharp focus.
Sullurpeta municipality in Tirupati district has four candidates in the fray for the chairperson’s post. But the principal contest is between TDP nominee Pitla Suhasini and YSRC candidate Modi Vimala Kumari. The municipality has 32 wards, of which the TDP has already secured two unopposed victories, giving the party an early advantage in the ward-level tally.
Naidupeta municipality is witnessing a keen contest between TDP candidate Shaik Shakeela and YSRC nominee Tammireddy Rajeswaramma. With the chairperson’s post and all 32 wards in contention, both camps are leaving no stone unturned to mobilise support. The intensity of the campaign has fuelled talk of heavy spending with rival candidates seeking to gain an edge.
In Venkatagiri, former municipal chairperson Donthu Sarada has returned to the electoral arena as the TDP nominee, facing YSRC candidate Boligala Deevena. The municipality has 36 wards, making the contest crucial for both parties. YSRC Venkatagiri Assembly constituency in-charge Nedurumalli Ramakumar Reddy has been working intensively to secure control of the civic body.
Atmakur municipality is witnessing a contest between TDP nominee Dr. Bommireddy Shakeela and YSRCP candidate Allareddy Indumathi. Dr. Shakeela, daughter-in-law of late Dr. B. Sundarrami Reddy, a three-time Atmakur MLA, is banking on her family’s long-standing connections with voters. She is further drawing support from Atmakur MLA and Endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, whose backing is expected to be significant in the contest.
In Buchireddypalem, the contest between TDP nominee Dodla Vijayalakshmi and YSRCP candidate Shaik Shakeela Begum has emerged as another closely watched battle. Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy has been devoting considerable time campaigning for Vijayalakshmi, with members of the influential Dodla and Bezawada families reaching out to voters.
On the YSRCP side, former MLA Nallapareddy Prasannakumar Reddy has taken up the campaign for Shakeela Begum, seeking to consolidate Muslim votes along with support from other sections of the electorate.
As the polling day approaches, contests across these municipalities are shaping up as tests of local leadership, party organisation, and the ability of candidates to translate political influence into votes.
