Visakhapatnam: The centenary celebrations of Andhra University gathered momentum with the “Vanitha Wave @100” women’s walkathon, which brought colour and enthusiasm to Beach Road on Friday.
The event was inaugurated by Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, who praised the achievements of women across various fields and said their talent and dedication continued to drive society forward. He noted that more than 30 per cent of leadership positions at Andhra University were held by women and expressed confidence that many more would rise to higher roles in future.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.P. Rajasekhar said the walkathon was organised to celebrate women’s empowerment and honour their contribution to the university’s 100-year journey. He said women were serving effectively in key posts such as principals, deans, wardens and heads of departments.
The walkathon began at the Kali Mata Temple and concluded at the Andhra University Convention Centre, drawing enthusiastic participation from women, students and youth.
The programme later featured Zumba sessions, cultural performances and yoga demonstrations.
Rector Prof. P. King, coordinator Prof. A. Pallavi, along with principals, deans, faculty members, staff and students, were present.
