Kakinada: The South Coast Railway’s Vijayawada Division has recorded the first-ever wood pulp commodity loading on Indian Railways. Wood pulp had been transported by road for more than 15 years. The first consignment was loaded at Kakinada (KSLK) on Saturday and transported to Bhigwan (BGVN) in Maharashtra, covering a distance of around 1,061 km.
The Railway Board, in July 2026, included wood pulp under Goods Tariff Class-110. The initiative is expected to provide an alternative to road transportation while supporting freight growth and the efficient movement of industrial goods.
According to the railway, the initiative aims to shift wood pulp transportation from road to rail and create new freight opportunities. Each wagon can carry around 45–50 tonnes, while the chargeable weight is 65.1 tonnes.
The freight per rake is estimated at around Rs 40 lakh, while the new loading is expected to reach approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes per year. The estimated annual revenue from the commodity is expected to be around Rs 20 crore.
