A 19-year-old worker died after an iron beam fell on his head at a construction site in Maharashtra’s Thane district, prompting the police to register a case against the contractor, an official said on Tuesday. The victim, Philip Andreas Bhegra, a native of Jharkhand, resided at the site in the Khidkali area under the Shil-Daighar police station limits, he said.

On the evening of July 11, Bhegra was walking around the site after completing his work when an iron beam fell from an upper floor of the under-construction building and hit him on the head, the official said.
The victim sustained grievous head injuries and died, he said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s cousin, the police have registered a case against the building’s construction contractor, Pratik Patel, under sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.
The complainant has alleged that the contractor failed to implement mandatory measures at the site, provide workers with safety equipment and assigned them work without adhering to safety protocols.
“No one has been arrested so far. The investigation into the case is underway,” the official from Shil-Daighar police station said.
