Yami Gautam Spent ‘1.5 Years’ To Learn The Holy Quaran And Islamic Laws For Her Role In Film, ‘Haq’

Bollywood actress, Yami Gautam has been the talk-of-the-town ever since her film, Haq, alongside Emraan Hashmi hit the theatres. For those who do not know, the movie hit the silver screens in November 2025 and it instantly made headlines for its meaningful narrative and powerful performances. The film focused on ‘Shazia Bano’, who drags her husband to court, after he refuses to pay her maintenance. Amid that, did you know that Yami Gautam spent more than a year learning the Islamic laws?

Yami Gautam learnt the Holy Quran for her role in Haq

Recently, Suparn Verma, who directed the blockbuster movie, Haq, had a candid conversation with BBC Asian Network, during which he spoke about the film, the lead actors, Yami and Emraan and the success of the movie. When asked about Yami Gautam and her character, Suparn revealed that they spent more than 1 year so that the actress could learn the Holy Quran. Suparn Verma was quoted as saying:

“We spent almost a year and a half understanding Islamic law.”

Further, Suparn Verma also spoke about the struggles he faced while researching for the movie, Haq. For the unversed, the movie follows the real-life 1985 incident of Shah Bano’s case, where she fought against her husband in the court for her rights. Addressing the problems, he faced, Suparn Verma shared:

“Everybody has information, you don’t know whether it’s right or wrong. In that space, I wanted Haq to be a voice of reason.”

Days after the movie, Haq released on Netflix, multiple cinephiles and fellow actors took to their social media handles to appreciate the Kaabil actress. Celebrities like Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Alia Bhatt, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and more hailed the actress for her breath-taking performance. Apart from them, multiple users praised her and felt that Yami deserves a National Award for this film.

Later, Yami Gautam took to her Instagram handle to share a post for all her fans. In the post, she expressed her happiness and revealed that she will cherish it for the rest of her life. For those who missed the post, Yami had addressed the positive reviews that her movie, Haq was receiving. Her note could be read as:

“The power of ‘Word of mouth’. No foul play or any gimmicks. Straight from our hearts to the audience. Even from a trade & media perspective, I feel a lot of positivity that they want a film like ‘ HAQ’ to be a success. It’s a rarity & I shall cherish this moment for life.”

Haq is a popular courtroom drama, directed by Suparn Verma. The movie was inspired by the legal case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum. For those who missed it, the film follows the journey of ‘Shazia’ (Yami Gautam), whose husband, a lawyer, marries someone else and refuses to help her and their kids financially. Later, ‘Shazia’ takes him to court and decides to fight for her rights.

The major highlight of the movie was the powerful performances by Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi. It is worth mentioning that even though it didn’t do very well at the box office, it managed to impress the audience. However, before the release, Haq faced multiple hurdles. Reportedly, Shah Bano’s family sent a legal notice to the makers, claiming that they did not take any permission from them. Later, the court gave green light to the release of the movie stating that the story was fictionalised.
