Reigning Kannada star Yash appears to be taking a bold step with Toxic, with a nude scene featuring the actor in the recently released trailer triggering a storm on social media. The nude sequence has sparked debate over how far Indian stars are now willing to push the boundaries on screen.
“It would have had shock value, but the scene has been presented aesthetically,” says director Ashok Teja. “Ranbir Kapoor had similar nude scenes in Animal. After Ranbir, Yash has now attempted something equally bold, and it is bound to create a storm.”
Ashok Teja feels that Telugu stars have traditionally been more restrained when it comes to intimate and bold scenes. “Stars like Prabhas, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun and Jr NTR have largely opted for conventional romance and have not gone overboard. Telugu stars are probably a little more cautious. Despite their global popularity, Prabhas and Allu Arjun have mostly limited themselves to romantic scenes without crossing certain boundaries, perhaps because they do not want to shock their huge fan bases,” he points out.
According to Teja, Yash has the screen presence to pull off such unconventional choices. “Yash has the looks, stature and performance skills to convey both pain and vulnerability. An actor who can appear strong and vulnerable at the same time is a deadly combination. That is a major advantage for him,” he adds.
He believes younger audiences are also changing the rules for mainstream cinema. “Gen Z audiences are more open to such sequences and may appreciate heroes who break established boundaries. It gives filmmakers greater creative freedom to explore things that have not been attempted before, both in romance and action,” he says.
Producer Lagadapati Sridhar believes Yash’s transformation from KGF to Toxic reflects the changing definition of a hero. “The days of black-and-white heroes are gone. Stars like Yash are breaking the old mould where a hero was expected to be a good Samaritan,” he says. “White, grey and black lines have blurred. Heroes today have to be unpredictable. When audiences cannot anticipate their next move, it becomes a key surprise factor in a big action film.”
Sridhar also points to Yash’s contrasting choices in his upcoming films. “He is playing the mythological character Ravana in Ramayana and a ruthless gangster in Toxic. That shows his range. He is extremely talented, and the fact that he is also a co-producer and co-writer shows that he is putting his money where his mouth is,” he says.
“The definition of a hero has changed. Today, audiences look at the character, his goals and whether he succeeds in his mission rather than simply judging whether he is good or bad. Even in real life, people often celebrate people who achieve their goals irrespective of the path they choose, of course in life, the kama factor comes in,” he adds.
According to Sridhar, Yash’s rise has been extraordinary. “His meteoric rise is beyond imagination. He is also working with Lionsgate for global distribution and seems to be getting everything right. His films combine emotion, action and romance, and he is presenting himself differently each time. The big question now is how far Yash is willing to push those boundaries,” he concludes.
