Your golf shoes are costing you speed. Here’s what you should know

When was the last time you actually thought about your golf shoes as a piece of performance equipment?

If you’re like most guys — and frankly, if you were like me before walking into the FootJoy lab on Manchester Lane — you treat golf shoes like a fashion accessory OR just a plain comfort play. I’m that guy, and I knew nothing.

You walk into the shop, online or at a PGA TOUR Superstore, grab whatever size you’ve worn since you became an adult (because obviously I’m a size 10) and match them to whatever polo you’re rocking that day. Technology? Torsional stiffness? Total blind spot. In this realm, I’ll happily admit I was a complete idiot. My cohort Jake is way more versed in this world than I am. Like my Golf Pride fitting in Pinehurst, this was an eye opener.

We obsess over millimeters on a club face, custom shafts and launch-monitor numbers, but we totally ignore the literal foundation standing between our feet and the turf. Turns out, ignoring that foundation is a great way to leak speed and consistency.

Here are the top three reasons why getting the right shoe — and actually getting fitted — can completely change how you play.

1. The millimeter: Freezing your feet to stop ‘timing golf’

Think about what happens during the downswing. As you get to your horizontal rotation, your weight violently transfers to your front foot. You’re pushing, pulling and torquing your body to generate clubhead speed.

If your shoes don’t lock you in, your trail foot is gonna slip, a bunch, a little or maybe it’s so subtle you don’t even notice.

You might not consciously realize it happening, but your brain does. That little bit of slippage means the torque you’re creating isn’t going into core rotation — it’s just going into unwanted foot movement.

You’re trying to hit this spot with as much clubhead speed as you can, and now your trail foot is moving six, seven millimeters — and that’s affecting how the hips can get around. So now you’re playing timing golf. I have enough moving parts to manage already, so eliminating variables is paramount.

When your feet slide even a fraction of an inch, your body has to make a subconscious compensation just to square the club up. Move into a structured, performance-built platform like the Premier Series Packard — complete with a heavier, ground-hugging feel and serious traction — and you take that variable entirely off the table. I grew up on FootJoy classics and what I always loved about that show was it was heavy (with leather sole and nails). You were easily locked into the ground.

As the FJ guys explained, that shoe is built specifically for the exact moment in the swing when you need to freeze your feet so you can just let loose.

2. What you are getting wrong about sizing

If you haven’t had your feet properly measured since buying kicks with your Mom, you’re just guessing.

During our fitting, the FJ team mapped my feet and pointed out something I never thought about: my left foot is two millimeters longer, but my right foot is five millilmeters wider.

Most of us just grab a box off the shelf, slide our feet in and hope for the best. But shoe architecture matters big time, especially across the instep. If you’ve ever walked off the 18th hole with a dull, throbbing ache across the top of your foot, you know exactly what a bad fit feels like.

When you get into a shoe built specifically for your foot height and width, you eliminate those pinch points. Your feet stop fighting the shoe, and you can actually trust your base through a full 36 holes without wanting to rip your shoes off in the parking lot.

The lineup: What I tried and how they performed

To figure out what actually worked, I put three totally different models to the test, via both fit and the launch monitor:

It needs to be said that I did LOVE the feeling of all of the shoes for different reasons, but I’ll always lean toward the heavy option in terms of performance. Old habits die hard I guess.

3. Choosing your feel and matching your swing

Not all golf shoes are trying to do the same job, and part of unlocking your potential is picking the platform that matches how you actually want to play. In my case, I wanna feel nailed in and fast.

What I landed on

When all was said and done, dropping down a half size into the right fit across the board delivered immediate, undeniable dividends on the launch monitor — 2 mph faster swing speed. That could be 3 yards in carry.

By simply getting into the correct size and structure, I flat out got faster.

What did I ultimately land on? I’m sticking with the structured confidence and timeless styling of the Premier Series. Knowing that there’s a ridiculous amount of engineering and tech packed into a classic silhouette — rather than just some old shoemaker in a leather-bound room hacking away — completely levels up my appreciation for what’s on my feet. (Although I’d still wear the classics if they had ’em.)

When you find that sweet spot where style, comfort and grip intersect, it changes your mental freedom on the course. You stop worrying about whether your footing is going to hold up when you really want to step on one, and you just swing the damn club.

All this stuff matters.
