Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans has thrown his support behind Michael Carrick, insisting the players do not want another managerial change despite the club’s disastrous start to the season.
Carrick has come under increasing pressure following consecutive defeats to Como and Bournemouth, with United enduring their worst run of results since 2015.
However, the club’s hierarchy has opted to stick with the former midfielder, who guided United back into the Champions League during his initial spell in charge last season.
Tielemans, who joined from Aston Villa in the summer, believes stability is essential if United are to turn their fortunes around.
Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, Tielemans revealed that Carrick played a significant role in his decision to move to Old Trafford.
“I came here partly because of him, because he wanted me here, he wants me to help the team out,” the Belgium international said.
“So I am very happy for him to stay and the whole group, we don’t want a sudden change.
“We don’t want a big change that is going to disrupt things more than they are, we just need stability, we need to keep working hard and then it’s going to turn at some point.”
United have won just one of their opening eight Premier League matches, with a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como followed by a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.
Carrick insists United players are ‘hungry’ to turn things around
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Carrick insists his attention remains on improving performances rather than responding to criticism.
“My responsibility is the players,” he explained. “The outside is not anything for me to focus on.
“I know what we can affect, I know what we need to improve.
“The boys, I have to say, are hungry. We’re hurting because we haven’t won enough football games, but there’s an intensity, there’s a bit of an edge, there’s a disappointment, there’s a hunger to do better, for sure.”
