SRINAGAR: At a mega job fair held in Srinagar’s iconic Amar Singh College on Tuesday, as many as 470 youth received on-the-spot recruitment while another 430 candidates were shortlisted.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hailed the 77th State-Level Mega Job Fair as a meaningful stride toward reducing unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that nearly 900 young people have either secured jobs or reached the final stage of recruitment, quoting that “around 470 youth received on‑the‑spot recruitment while another 430 candidates have been shortlisted” . With 5,300 registrations and over 50 employers, including companies operating in the Gulf, the fair offered direct recruitment, industry exposure and career guidance.

Abdullah emphasised that higher education institutions must go beyond awarding degrees and actively support students’ transition into employment. He praised Cluster University Srinagar and Desh Bhagat University for bridging the long-standing gap between education and employability. He called for institutionalising campus recruitment across all universities in the Union Territory, stressing that government jobs alone cannot solve unemployment and that the administration must expand opportunities through private sector engagement, skill development, entrepreneurship and industry partnerships.

Highlighting the region’s talent, he reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the startup ecosystem, connecting youth with venture capital and providing structured support for new enterprises. During the event, he handed out appointment letters to selected candidates and witnessed the signing of an MoU between Cluster University Srinagar and Desh Bhagat University aimed at enhancing academic collaboration and employability initiatives.

Abdullah expressed confidence that continued employment drives would further increase placements, describing the fair as a landmark initiative demonstrating the potential of organised campus recruitment in J&K.
