Vijayawada:A 22-year-old youth allegedly attacked a 19-year-old girl with a knife after she refused to marry him, leading to her death at Ajit Singh Nagar in Vijayawada on Saturday. The youth then died by suicide.
Ajit Singh Nagar circle inspector D. Chandra Sekhar said the accused, M. Chinna Rao, hailed from Guppidipeta village in Polanki mandal of Srikakulam district. He had been staying with his elder brother Mahesh and worked as a painter and flower decorator. Chinna Rao had been in a relationship for a year with P. Maha Lakshmi, who lived with her grandmother and worked at a cloth shop.
On learning about the relationship, Mahesh warned his younger brother against continuing the relationship. However, the couple remained in contact.
Subsequently, Chinna Rao reportedly proposed marriage. Following this, Maha Lakshmi began distancing herself from him. They kept having heated arguments over the issue in recent days.
At around 9:15 am on Saturday, Chinna Rao went to her house while she had been alone, as her grandmother, Santhamma, had gone out to buy breakfast. During an argument over the marriage proposal, he allegedly attacked Maha Lakshmi with a knife, causing severe injuries on her head, shoulder, and ear. She screamed for help and fell unconscious, following which Chinna Rao fled from the place. Local residents rushed to the house. On finding Maha Lakshmi seriously injured, they rushed her to the government hospital.
Believing that he had killed Maha Lakshmi, Chinna Rao went to a multi-storey building attempted suicide. He sustained multiple fractures. His elder brother took him to the government hospital in an autorickshaw. But doctors declared him dead.
Maha Lakshmi succumbed to her injuries around 1 pm.
Police have registered a murder case against Chinna Rao, and a separate case relating to his death.
