HANAMKONDA: The land dispute at YSR Nagar in Kazipet has resurfaced, with residents questioning ownership claims, assurances of double-bedroom houses for hut dwellers willing to vacate the land and permissions granted to a nearby residential complex.
Nearly 100 families have been living in huts on about six acres for years, area residents said. They claim to have house numbers and electricity bills. Former MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar had earlier said some families had been living there since 2005.
However, house numbers and electricity bills do not by themselves establish legal ownership. Revenue records, survey documents, and court orders are crucial to determining questions of ownership.
Questions are being raised over whether officials have identified the land as government property under land ceiling laws, whether it had formally been declared as surplus, and whether any court ruled in favour of private individuals. Survey numbers remain unclear.
Questions have emerged over a large residential complex nearby. Allegations are being made that the complex, which had been a residential zone for years, is being converted for commercial use. The permissions for the change in use and compliance with regulations, however, require examination. Claims of financial transactions linked to the conversion remain unverified.
Hut dwellers have raised concerns over assurances of double-bedroom houses for those who agree to vacate the land. Some reportedly left but later returned, demanding that their huts be restored. They have sought clarity on who made the assurances, whether an official rehabilitation plan exists, or alternative accommodation will be provided before any eviction.
There are claims that a former corporator is playing a key role in the dispute, while some Congress leaders have reportedly raised questions involving the local MLA. These claims have not been independently substantiated. The official position of Congress remains unclear.
Former BRS MLA Vinay Bhaskar is supporting the hut dwellers. He threatened an indefinite hunger strike and legal action if attempts are made to remove the huts. He had earlier alleged that some individuals, claiming to belong to the Shapur Irani family, are attempting to take possession of the land.
