The daughter of Princess Anne joined a host of European royals in Germany to attend the opening ceremony of the 2026 FEI World Championships

Zara Tindall beamed as she returned to the spot of her greatest-ever triumph 20 years on – and joined a prestigious carriage procession.
The daughter of Princess Anne, who is not a working royal, was all smiles in Aachen, Germany, at the FEI World Equestrian Games to kick off day one of one of the world’s most eagerly anticipated equestrian events.
Zara has long had a passion for all things equine, and is regularly seen at major UK race days, including the annual Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot, which she attends alongside the Royal Family. She has a long history with the FEI championships, as in 2006, she won individual eventing gold riding her horse Toytown.
Zara, who wore all black for the event, took part in a carriage procession, in which royals from both Denmark and the Netherlands also participated, to signify the respective unity of the three royal stables.
Queen Mary of Denmark rode in her own royal carriage, as did Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, who is heir to the Dutch throne. Other international royals in attendance included Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo and the sister of King Felipe VI of Spain, and Princess Benedikte of Denmark: the sister of Denmark’s former Queen Margrethe.
The championships, which run until August 23, are a global equestrian event where world titles are contested in six major disciplines: dressage, eventing, driving, para-dressage, show jumping, and vaulting. The dressage, eventing and show jumping events are crucial qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics.
Stefanie Peters, president of Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein who runs the event, said of the royal presence at the championship: “The visit of these high-ranking royal guests is a great honour – for the ALRV, for the city, and above all for our spectators.”
She continued: “When else do you get to experience so much royal splendour up close? When traditional royal houses, with their passion for horses, meet the unique atmosphere of Allianz Park, the result is unforgettable imagery.
“You’re not just attending a world-class sporting event – you’re experiencing history, emotion, and spine-tingling moments live in the stadium. You can hardly get any closer to royal flair and the fascination of equestrian sports.”
Zara has followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, in pursuing a passion in equestrianism, and carved out an impressive career for herself.
The royal, who is married to former rugby star Mike Tindall, won team silver at the 2012 London Olympics and other European eventing championship titles. She was also named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2006 – the same year she won gold at the FEI World Championships.
In 2020, Zara became a patron of World Horse Welfare, joining the charity alongside her mother, who serves as its president. In November last year, Zara gave an impassioned speech, urging audiences at a conference last November to see “through the horse’s eyes.”
“I think seeing through their eyes is all about partnership; it’s feeling them every day and how different they come out, being receptive to that and working with that,” she said.
