Zubeen Garg's Widow Demands Justice On His First Death Anniversary; What Happened To The 7 Accused?

It has been a year since the tragic passing of Assam’s icon, Zubeen Garg. The singer, who voiced numerous memorable songs in Bollywood and regional cinema, passed away on September 19, 2025, while on a trip to Singapore. A year after the tragedy, his music continues to bring people together across Assam.

On the singer’s first death anniversary, his wife, Garima Garg, said she sees him everywhere as thousands of admirers gather to celebrate his life and legacy. But the family still awaits justice as seven accused face legal proceedings in Zubeen’s death probe.

Zubeen Garg’s widow remembers her late husband as Assam observes Zubeen Divas

The three-day Zubeen Divas observance, which began on September 17, 2026, has brought fans and artistes to Zubeen Kshetra in Kamarkuchi for music, prayers and cultural tributes. The celebrations come as the family continues to seek justice and answers about the circumstances surrounding his death in Singapore.

Speaking to NDTV on September 19, 2026, Garima said the outpouring of people beyond differences of religion, background and belief makes her realise Zubeen’s presence everywhere. She said:

“I see him everywhere, and he is here because, see the way people have come out, they are not considering what background they are from, what their religion is, or whatever their belief is. They have come as human beings.”

Garima added that the gathering on Zubeen Divas represented the kind of Assam her husband had dreamed of. “Here only we can see people, and that is the philosophy, his ideology, and this is his dream for a beautiful Assam. So that is what we are getting here, in a very little form, but everyone has come here with love, with respect for him.”

Garima said Zubeen’s admirers continue to carry his values and philosophy with them. On his death anniversary, she remembers it as a celebration of his life and creativity rather than a funeral. In her words:

“They have kept him in their heart and they are carrying him that way, with his ideology, his philosophy. So that is what we all want actually. This is everyone’s dream. So people of Assam are not celebrating Zubeen Garg’s funeral. They are celebrating Zubeen Divas.”

Garima Garg says the family is still waiting for answers: What happened to the 7 accused individuals?

While the anniversary celebrations have focused on Zubeen’s music and legacy, the circumstances surrounding his death remain the subject of legal proceedings in Assam. Zubeen, 52, died in Singapore last year during a yacht outing. While Singapore authorities ruled it an accidental drowning, the singer’s family and close associates believe the circumstances of the outing warrant further scrutiny, especially as the singer reportedly appeared fine just minutes before he died.

After Zubeen’s death, a criminal case in Assam has proceeded on allegations of murder, and seven were identified as accused in the case. All seven are currently undergoing trial in an Exclusive Fast-Track Sessions Court in Guwahati.

Following investigations by an Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a massive 2,500+ page chargesheet was filed. In May 2026, the fast-track court officially framed charges against all seven men, who have pleaded not guilty.

Four out of the seven accused are facing murder charges under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). They include North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta.

Zubeen’s cousin Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), is facing charges of culpable homicide (Section 105 of BNS). The other two men, Zubeen’s personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been charged with criminal breach of trust and conspiracy under sections 316 and 61 of the BNS.

With one year gone, NDTV asked Garima about the family’s demand for justice. She said they are still awaiting some answers. She told the outlet:

“We have to get justice… we all want justice for Zubeen Garg. We want to know what really happened on 19th of September in 2025 in Singapore… And if justice is not for Zubeen, then for who? So does that have any meaning? At least in Assam we have to get justice for Zubeen Garg.”

Several musicians have joined the anniversary tributes, honouring Zubeen through their performances and work. Garima said singer and composer Salim Merchant had travelled to Assam to pay tribute to the late artiste. She also mentioned Dhruv Gandhi, who visited Zubeen’s studio and was expected to visit Zubeen Theatre. Singer Kunal Ganjawala also dedicated a song to Zubeen.

Assamese filmmaker Rajesh Bhuyan, who directed Zubeen’s last film Roi Roi Binale and was a close friend, also remembered the singer during the anniversary. He said, “We all miss him. He is here with us.”
