Visakhapatnam: A 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Parvathipuram Manyam district on Monday. Police arrested 16 persons, including women and teenagers, in connection with the murder.
The victim, Tadanga Ramesh of Velagavalasa village under Parvathipuram mandal, was reportedly attacked by a group of villagers who dragged him from his house and assaulted him. Police said the accused later shifted his body to the outskirts of the village and attempted to burn it to destroy evidence.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, T. Sridhar, Parvathipuram Rural police recovered the partially burnt body and sent it for post-mortem. Ramesh is survived by his wife and two children.
Three special police teams were formed to trace the accused, leading to the arrest of 16 suspects. Further investigation was underway.
