HYDERABAD: With nearly 44 lakh voters whose hearing dates have lapsed in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, officials clarified that no eligible voter will lose their vote. Rather than issuing fresh dates, it was decided that such voters may attend hearings until the end of the notice phase and disposal of claims and objections, which concludes on November 5.
Election officials said a liberal methodology was adopted, allowing voters who missed their scheduled dates to appear at their convenience. “Hearings are continuing and even those which have lapsed are being considered parallely across centres. Since no eligible voter loses his or her vote, there is no issue with specific dates,” an electoral registration officer (ERO) told Deccan Chronicle.
To clear pendency, booth level officers were telephoning those who failed to appear and urging them to reach out to assistant EROs who are available at centres. “The process started on July 29. Now, parallelly, we are not only clearing pending notices but also disposing of them,” the ERO explained.
By Saturday, Hyderabad district had generated 12.53 lakh notices, of which 7.60 lakh (60%) hearings were already conducted. The issue was raised at a meeting of the District Election Officer (DEO) with political parties, where the DEO clarified that voters have liberty to attend hearings till the last day. However, he cautioned that those failing to appear will have their votes deleted.
Across Telangana, of the total 92,88,164 notices, over 86 lakh were delivered. Hearings held and parked for the final list stood at more than 41 lakh, while those with lapsed dates were close to 44 lakh.
