92 Life Convicts to Be Released from Cherlapally Prison

Hyderabad: Ninety-two life convict prisoners, including 86 male prisoners and half a dozen female prisoners would be released from Cherlapally central prison on Tuesday afternoon.

As per the approved guidelines, 92 life convict prisoners have been found eligible for consideration of special remission. The Congress government after taking over charge had issued G.O MS No.37 Home Services-V, Department Dated:02-07-2024 for grant of special remission to 213 convict prisoners including 178 male and 35 female convict prisoners and they had been released accordingly.

Regular release of prisoners on the basis of good behaviour and conduct as per eligibility will help in reducing overcrowding of prisons and uphold the human values as per the spirit of the Supreme Court guidelines.

The Telangana Prisons department identified and submitted the list of life convict prisoners eligible for remission as on February 1, 2026 to the government for necessary action as per the guidelines and directions of the Supreme Court.

The list had been prepared by the Jail Superintendents as per the guidelines of the government order and the same was verified by the internal committee of IGs and DIGs and sent to the Standing Committee comprising Special Chief Secretary to Home, Secretary to Govt. Law Department and Director General of Prisons for scrutiny and recommendation.

After approval of the cabinet, it was sent to the Governor for approval. The Governor convened a meeting to discuss the proposal of Telangana Prison department for grant of special remission to life convict prisoners.

From Telangana Prisons Department, Dr. Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, and N. Murali Babu, Inspector General of Prisons, attended the meeting.
