The Owens sisters might be back for more magic, margaritas and mayhem, but some fans are already unhappy after seeing the new trailer and noticing one original witch is missing.

Almost three decades after the original, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are officially back for Practical Magic 2 and the sequel looks set to be just as bewitching as the first.

Warner Bros dropped the first trailer for the film giving fans a glimpse at the long-awaited sequel ahead of its cinema release on September 11, and my inner 13-year-old self is positively giddy with excitement.

Directed by Susanne Bier, who previously worked with Bullock on the horror film Bird Box, the film sees the return of the iconic Owens sisters as they deal with troubling history and grapple with the curse that has plagued their family for centuries.

The new trailer begins with Sally saying: “I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family — the ones from Massachusetts, the ones their neighbours whisper are witches.”

According to the official synopsis, the sequel “returns to a world steeped in moonlit mischief and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all in a must-see cinematic event of fun, magic and mayhem.”

Sandra, 61, and Nicole, 58, reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, with the story picking up 25 years after the events of the 1999 film.

Sally’s (Bullock) daughters, Kylie and Antonia, are all grown up and Gillian (Kidman) has calmed down her wild ways and settled into a quieter existence, complete with her signature black cat.

However, while Sally and Gillian are content with peace it seems trouble is out to get them in the form of a mysterious new character played by Lee Pace. And if you think the actor looks familiar, it’s because he played Thranduil the Elvenking in the Hobbit trilogy.

In the trailer, Sally tells Pace, “Everyone we love dies.” Gillian then adds, “A really horrible death…It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”

This could explain why actor Aidan Quinn, who played Investigator Gary Hallet, and was supposedly Sally’s answer to breaking the curse, is not in the sequel. Did he die? And how horrible was it? We’ll have to wait and see.

Fans will also be delighted to see the return of familiar faces Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, as beloved aunts Frances and Jet, who are both looking extraordinarily good – clearly some witchcraft is at play.

The sequel also stars Kissing Booth star Joey King and Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams as Sally’s grown up daughters, along with Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod as their love interests.

After the release of the trailer, fans were quick to share their thoughts with many upset that original actress Evan Rachel Wood was not returning as a grown up Kylie Owens, Sally’s eldest daughter.

One viewer penned, “No Evan Rachel Wood?”, to which someone else replied, “She also said she would have done a cameo in the film for free. The producers, for whatever reason, just didn’t want her back.”

Last year, Evan Rachel Wood confirmed she would not be returning for the sequel. She wrote on social media: “I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans.

“It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
