Hardoi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday targeted the Indian National Congress and the Samajwadi Party, accusing them of being “anti-women” during his address at the inauguration of the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district.

He alleged that the Samajwadi Party opposed the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment, which aimed to provide reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from 2029. Modi said both parties have demonstrated an anti-women stance in recent times.

“The Samajwadi Party is both anti-development and anti-women. In recent days, the country has once again witnessed the anti-women face of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. The Central NDA government had brought the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment, and if it had passed, women would have received reservations in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies starting from the 2029 elections,” he said.

He added that the amendment would have enabled a large number of women to be elected to legislatures without reducing seats from other categories. Modi criticised the Samajwadi Party for voting against the proposal, alleging that it remains driven by nepotism and caste-based politics.

The remarks come after opposition parties in the Lok Sabha voted against the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-first Amendment) Bill. In the division, 298 members voted in favour while 230 opposed it. Following its defeat, the government chose not to proceed with related bills, including the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.

Highlighting development in Uttar Pradesh, Modi said the state is progressing towards becoming a trillion-dollar economy. He noted that a state once labelled as “backward” is now emerging as a major manufacturing hub.

“Uttar Pradesh was once called a BIMARU state, but today it is moving forward toward becoming a trillion-dollar economy. The state has immense potential, especially with its large young population, and we are working to harness this strength to make it a manufacturing hub,” he said.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the expressway project built at an estimated cost of Rs 36,230 crore. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state BJP president Pankaj Choudhary were also present at the event.
