The Delhi High Court on Thursday said the conduct of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal falls within the definition of criminal contempt under Section 2(c) of the Contempt of Courts Act in connection with remarks linked to the excise policy case.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that similar allegations made by AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Durgesh Pathak also amounted to contempt under the law.

During the proceedings, the court remarked that “a lie spoken a thousand times does not become truth” and stressed that contempt law exists to protect the institution of the judiciary rather than any individual judge.

“The constitutional duty of the court is to ensure the rule of law does not collapse by choosing convenience,” Justice Sharma said, adding that a judge “cannot capitulate”.

The judge also said several respondents and other persons had made “defamatory, vilifying and contemptuous allegations” against her in relation to the matter.

Justice Sharma further stated that the order would also be pronounced in Hindi since the contemnors had posted videos in Hindi and argued the matter in Hindi.

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to pass contempt of court orders at 5:30 pm in the excise policy case.
