Suriya’s latest release, Karuppu, continues to enjoy a commanding run at the box office. Directed by RJ Balaji, the action drama has crossed Rs 160 crore worldwide within just five days of release, reaffirming the star’s enduring pull among audiences.

Karuppu holds firm despite weekday slowdown

The film has emerged as a particularly strong performer in Tamil Nadu, where it has already collected more than Rs 80 crore. With sustained audience interest and positive word-of-mouth, the film is now on course to enter the coveted Rs 100 crore club in the state, a milestone achieved by only a handful of Tamil films.

Across India, Karuppu has earned Rs 95.05 crore nett and Rs 110.04 crore gross. Its opening weekend alone contributed an impressive Rs 68 crore, powered by glowing reviews and enthusiastic audience response. While the film saw an expected dip once the weekdays began, the drop has remained well within healthy limits.

Monday collections stood at nearly Rs 15 crore, representing a 49.6 per cent decline from Sunday. Tuesday added another Rs 12.75 crore, a modest 10.8 per cent decrease from Monday’s numbers. The steadiness suggests that the film has found strong support beyond its opening weekend and is likely to maintain momentum in the days ahead.

If the current trend continues, Karuppu is expected to comfortably cross Rs 200 crore worldwide before the end of its extended theatrical run.

Suriya’s restrained turn powers an ambitious courtroom fantasy

One of the key reasons behind the film’s success has been the overwhelmingly positive response to Suriya’s central performance. In Karuppu, the actor plays a lawyer whose journey gradually takes on mythic dimensions, blending legal drama with spiritual and supernatural elements.

The unusual premise has struck a chord with audiences, and many viewers have praised the way director RJ Balaji balances mass appeal with emotionally grounded storytelling. The filmmaker, who also appears in a significant role, has crafted a screenplay that combines commercial spectacle with deeper thematic concerns.

Joining Suriya is Trisha Krishnan, reuniting with her Aaru (2005) co-star after two decades. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty Subramaniam, Supreeth Reddy and Anagha Maya Ravi.

Filmfare’s review highlighted the understated nature of Suriya’s work, stating, “At the centre of the film is Suriya, who delivers one of his more restrained performances in recent years. Rather than relying on overt star mannerisms, he grounds the role in quiet intensity and emotional control. Saravanan’s moral certainty never feels imposed, and Suriya lends the character enough vulnerability to make his journey persuasive even when the narrative moves into heightened territory. In the film’s strongest moments, his performance gives the story both emotional weight and dramatic credibility.”

With robust numbers, strong reviews and audience enthusiasm showing no signs of slowing, Karuppu has cemented itself as one of the biggest Tamil hits of the year. All eyes are now on whether the film can turn its impressive early run into another major box office milestone for Suriya.
