EXCLUSIVE: Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein’s flirty Office Romance promotion is ‘just for the cameras’ says body language expert Judi James after decoding their recent London premiere appearance
Rumours about and off-screen relationship have been circulating Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein in the past few months as they have promoted their new Netflix rom-com.
Last night the singer, 56, and Brett, 46, appeared in London for the premiere of Office Romance, and put on a fairly cosy display with shared looks, close conversations, and various moments where they physically touched.
However, not all was as it seems, as body language expert Judi James argued that the pair’s close display was only for the cameras, and there were signs of performance from both, that suggested there is truly nothing romantic between them.
“In what looks like a cultivated moment for the cameras, J-Lo and Brett provide one ‘loving look’ of exchanged eye contact as they stand on the red carpet, but that ‘moment’ doesn’t seem to define any authentic romantic aura between the couple as, otherwise, their non-verbal signals in these photos and clips suggest a polite, professional relationship,” said Judi.
She suggested that Brett appeared to be attempting to “perfect” the way he looked lovingly at the star: “J-Lo clearly looks like the huge star that she is, while Brett appears very respectful of that. Even in their ‘Loving look’ pose his smile appears to come with clenched teeth as though he feels under some pressure to get it perfectly right for her.
“Otherwise their connection and touch rituals seem to ooze a sense of respect and some very gentlemanly conduct from Brett.”
Judi claimed that, rather than leaning towards one another, they avoid touch where possible. “When we look more closely at their body language, there are times the duo appear to avoid touch and proximity rather than encourage or enjoy it.”
She added that video footage of the pair inside the premiere, introducing their film also highlighted their lack of intimacy.
“As they walk out on stage Brett walks ahead but when he proffers a hand to J-Lo she very emphatically avoids a hand clasp with flesh-to-flesh contact and instead clasps his wrist, over the cuff of his jacket. He gives her a micro-signal tie-sign of his intentions by doing a small upward hand flick and she immediately moves her hand to the crook of his arm to create a very formal touch ritual as they walk on stage.
“As soon as they arrive at their interview spot his left hand goes into his pocket to avoid touch and she clasps her hands in front of her torso, while the spatial gap between them looks relatively wide. Brett even turns his back on her and moves away further towards the interviewer.
“J-Lo connects with a more dominant hand on his back but he turns away with, again, no responding tie-signs. As he is interviewed she even inspects the space between them and then widens it.”
Judi explained that their eye contact with one another also didn’t hint at any deeper feelings: “When they do connect with eye contact J-Lo ends with a rapid double blink ‘finish’ ritual rather than a lingering look of love. There is an odd moment when they chat together while the other guy is being interviewed but then she turns to wave and walk off and Brett has to point her in the opposite direction.”
She added that as soon as the pair were seemingly “off camera” they stopped touching, with J-Lo using her team for support instead of Brett: “We again get the hand in the crook of the arm as they exit the stage but J-Lo appears to quickly transfer her touch ritual to what looks like her security and walks off ahead to take her seat in the row behind Brett with no other connection signals in this clip once they are ‘off-camera’.
“They look friendly but polite and respectful in these clips rather than showing any subtle or less than subtle signs of any simmering off-screen romance.”
When Jennifer was asked directly if they were dating on The Today Show this week, she replied vaguely: “There’s never a time when I’m seen with somebody or working with somebody where they don’t try to put me with the person.”
However this answer didn’t impress the interviewers who then asked her to give a straight answer. Jennifer then clarified that they were “not dating”, while Brett added, “correct,” and the interviewer quickly moved on.
This is the only time the pair has blatantly denied being a couple, with fans certain that they are involved in either a real romance, or a showmance, which has become a common practice for the stars of upcoming romantic films.
